Who is Phoebe Gill, The 17-Year-Old British Runner in Athletics Set to Dominate Olympics 2024?

By Siddhika Prajapati

They say age ain't nothing but a number, and 17-year-old Phoebe Gill is living proof of that. This young dynamo is not just making waves in the world of athletics; she's creating a tsunami of talent that has left even the most seasoned veterans in awe.

From swimming to sprinting, Gill's journey to the track has been nothing short of a whirlwind. Starting off in the pool, she quickly transitioned to the track and never looked back.

Encouraged by a PE teacher to give cross country a try, Gill found her true calling and hasn't stopped running since. Joining the St Albans Athletic Club at a young age, Gill quickly rose through the ranks with a work ethic that would make even the most dedicated athlete envious.

And her hard work paid off in spectacular fashion when she shattered the European U18 record in the 800m, leaving her competitors in the dust and securing her a well-deserved spot on Team GB.

A Record-Breaking Run: Building an Impressive Resume

Gill's meteoric rise culminated in a stunning performance in Belfast, where she set a new European U18 record in the 800m. Her time of 1:57.86 not only shattered a 40-year-old record but also qualified her for the Olympics.

Over the years, Gill has quietly built an impressive track record, setting U17 records in both the 800m and 1500m. Her gold medal at the Commonwealth Youth Games showcased her ability to perform under pressure.

Gill's path to Team GB was cemented with a maiden British title in June, where she outpaced future Olympic teammate Jemma Reekie. Comparisons to Keely Hodgkinson, another prodigious talent, highlight her potential for Olympic success.

Gill will face tough competitors in Paris, including Allie Wilson and Nia Akina. Despite the formidable opposition, her talent and determination make her a strong contender for the gold. Should Gill clinch the gold, she will become the youngest 800m gold medalist in Olympic history, surpassing Athing Mu's record.
