Glasgow, July 27: India's Bindyarani Devi fought courageously to secure bronze in the women's 58kg weightlifting competition at the Commonwealth Games 2026, but the spotlight belonged to one athlete who proved untouchable throughout the contest.

Nigeria's Rafiatu Folashade Lawal delivered one of the finest weightlifting performances in Commonwealth Games history, smashing multiple records on her way to an emphatic gold medal at Glasgow's SEC Armadillo.

The reigning world championship silver medallist lived up to her billing by producing a dominant display that left the rest of the field battling only for silver and bronze.

A Record-Breaking Performance

Lawal began her campaign in sensational fashion during the snatch. The Nigerian successfully lifted 103kg, setting new Commonwealth and Commonwealth Games records to establish a commanding lead over the competition.

She carried that momentum into the clean and jerk, where her third lift was an outstanding 126kg and created yet another Commonwealth Games record.

Her combined total of 229kg was also enough to rewrite the Commonwealth and Games record books, underlining the gulf between herself and the rest of the field.

Canada's Ann-Sophie Taschereau claimed silver with a total of 215kg, while India's Bindyarani Devi secured bronze with 199kg.

From Commonwealth Champion to World-Class Contender

Lawal has steadily established herself among the world's elite weightlifters over the past few years.

She first announced herself on the international stage by winning gold at the 2022 Commonwealth Games in Birmingham, competing in the women's 59kg category.

Since then, she has continued to improve, culminating in a silver medal at the World Weightlifting Championships, a result that confirmed her credentials against the strongest lifters on the planet.

Her Glasgow performance reinforced that reputation, with her lifts comfortably surpassing the competition throughout the evening.

Nigeria has long been one of the strongest Commonwealth nations in weightlifting, particularly in the women's categories, and Lawal has emerged as the latest standard-bearer.

While Lawal cruised to gold, India's Bindyarani displayed tremendous determination to add another Commonwealth medal to her collection. After finishing fourth in the snatch with 87kg, the Manipuri lifter faced an uphill battle.

Her opening clean and jerk attempt of 110kg was initially ruled successful before being overturned on review because of a press-out. She responded impressively by completing 112kg on her second attempt but fell short at 116kg in her final lift, finishing with a total of 199kg.

The bronze added to the silver medal she won at the 2022 Commonwealth Games, while also becoming India's fifth weightlifting medal at the Glasgow Games.

Lawal, however, remained the undisputed star of the evening, producing a championship performance that may stand among the defining moments of the Commonwealth Games weightlifting competition.
