Indian high jumper Sarvesh Anil Kushare secured India's first track and field medal at the Commonwealth Games 2026 after clinching a historic silver in the Men's High Jump final at Scotstoun Stadium in Glasgow on Monday (July 27).

Kushare produced an outstanding performance, clearing 2.25m to finish level with Jamaica's Romaine Beckford. However, Beckford was awarded the gold medal on countback, having recorded fewer failed attempts throughout the competition. England's Kimani Jack completed the podium with a best clearance of 2.20m.

The final witnessed plenty of drama from the outset. There was initial confusion after the official CWG 2026 results website mistakenly listed India's Tejaswin Shankar as a Did Not Start (DNS) despite him being present on the field. Shankar entered the competition at 2.05m but suffered an injury during his opening attempt and was forced to withdraw. Despite the setback, the Indian star remained at the venue, encouraging and guiding his teammates from the sidelines.

Coming to Kushare, the Indian high-jumper remained composed throughout the contest, producing flawless first-attempt clearances at 2.10 ma and 2.15 m before soaring over 2.25 m to stay in contention for gold.

However, the 31-year-old athlete from Maharashtra narrowly missed out on the top step of the podium via a tiebreaker. Even then, his silver medal marked a significant milestone for India, delivering the nation's first athletics medal of the Glasgow Commonwealth Games.

Who Is Sarvesh Anil Kushare?

Sarvesh Anil Kushare is one of India's finest high jumpers and a multiple-time national champion who has emerged as the country's leading name in the event. Born in Devargaon village near Nashik, Maharashtra, Kushare began his athletics journey under the guidance of renowned coach R. W. Jadhav, who helped shape his career from an early age. He is currently employed with the Indian Army as a Naib Subedar.

Over the last decade, Kushare has consistently represented India at the highest level, competing in prestigious events such as the Asian Games, World Athletics Championships, and the Paris 2024 Olympic Games.

A breakthrough came at the 2023 Asian Athletics Championships in Bangkok, where he clinched the silver medal with a jump of 2.26m, earning qualification for the World Athletics Championships.

In 2025, Kushare achieved another milestone by finishing sixth at the World Athletics Championships, the best-ever finish by an Indian high jumper at the event. He continued his rise in 2026 by clearing a national record of 2.31m, becoming the first Indian to cross the 2.30m barrier.

His major achievements include a silver medal at the 2023 Asian Athletics Championships, a fourth-place finish at the 2022 Asian Games, and a historic sixth-place finish at the 2025 World Athletics Championships.
