Who Is Suchika Tariyal? The Athlete Confirming India’s First Medal at Asian Games 2026

New Delhi, September 20: India's Suchika Tariyal has become the first medalist at the Asian Games 2026. The 36-year-old professional MMA fighter defeated Mongolia's Altanchimeg Baigalmaa 2-0 in the traditional Mixed Martial Arts 60kg quarterfinal on Sunday.

The 36-year-old produced a composed performance to book her place in the semifinals, where she will compete on Monday. With both losing semifinalists guaranteed bronze medals, Tariyal's progression into the last four ensures India will return from the event with a medal.

Who Is Suchika Tariyal?

Suchika Tariyal is an accomplished Indian combat-sport athlete whose remarkable journey spans Judo, Jiu-Jitsu, and mixed martial arts (MMA). Hailing from Rohtak, Haryana, she began her sporting journey at the age of 12 after an incident of eve-teasing inspired her to take up Judo for self-defence.

Training at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium, Dada Dev Mandir Centre in Palam, and later SAI Bhopal, Suchika overcame family reservations and the challenges of travelling for competitions to establish herself as an international-level athlete. She represented India in more than 20 international Judo competitions and became an eight-time National Judo Champion.

Her Judo career includes a Gold medal at the 2019 Commonwealth Judo Championships, Gold at the 2019 South Asian Games, and Silver at the 2018 Commonwealth Judo Championships. She also represented India at multiple Asian Judo Championships and competed at the 2022 Commonwealth Games in Birmingham in the Women's -57 kg category.

Continuing to challenge herself, Suchika transitioned into Ju-Jitsu and achieved a major milestone in 2024 by winning Gold at the JJIF Ju-Jitsu World Championships in the Adults Contact Female -63 kg category.

She also returned to MMA after a seven-year hiatus, signing with BRAVE Combat Federation in 2024 and securing a victory at BRAVE CF 92 in Bahrain. Beyond sport, Suchika has served as a CISF Head Constable and later joined the Department of Sports, Haryana, as a Junior Coach.

Suchika Tariyal: Achievements

Tariyal has emerged as a promising force in Indian Mixed Martial Arts, showcasing consistency and determination on the international stage. She secured Bronze medals at the 3rd and 4th Asian Mixed Martial Arts Championships in January and May 2026, respectively, along with Gold medals at the 1st and 2nd MMA-SFI National Championships.

For her exploits in MMA, she has been put under the TAGG scheme of the Indian Government, including pre-Asian Games training at One Punch Academy, Mumbai, along with assistance with training kits, equipment, and recovery resources. With continued institutional support, Suchika is well-positioned to further strengthen her international performance and contribute to India's success in MMA at major global competitions.
