Why has Red Bull Racing sacked Christian Horner? Three Possible Reasons

By MyKhel Staff

Christian Horner has been dismissed as team principal and CEO of Red Bull Racing after nearly two decades at the helm.

Red Bull offered no specific reason for the decision but expressed gratitude for Horner's contributions since 2005, crediting him with shaping the team into a dominant force in Formula 1. Under his leadership, Red Bull secured eight drivers' championships - four each with Sebastian Vettel and Max Verstappen - and six constructors' titles.

Despite continuing his duties during last week's British Grand Prix, speculation about Verstappen's future and Red Bull's recent performance slump, with the team now fourth in the standings, added pressure. Laurent Mekies, formerly of Racing Bulls, will succeed Horner. The move follows lingering scrutiny over past misconduct allegations against Horner, which were twice dismissed. Red Bull CEO Oliver Mintzlaff lauded Horner's impact, stating he would "forever remain an important part" of the team's legacy.

Why is Christian Horner Sacked by Red Bull Racing? Three Possible Reasons

Team Performance Decline: Red Bull has struggled in the 2025 Formula 1 season, winning only two races and trailing McLaren by 141 points in the constructors' championship. Max Verstappen, their star driver, is third in the drivers' standings, 69 points behind leader Oscar Piastri.

Internal Tensions and Power Struggles: Horner has been embroiled in internal disputes within Red Bull, particularly following the death of co-founder Dietrich Mateschitz in 2022. Tensions with advisor Helmut Marko and Max Verstappen's father, Jos Verstappen, have been well-documented. Jos publicly stated in 2024 that the team would "explode" if Horner remained, indicating significant friction. The departure of key personnel, such as designer Adrian Newey, sporting director Jonathan Wheatley, and head of strategy Will Courtenay, further destabilized the team.

Lingering Impact of 2024 Scandal: In early 2024, Horner faced allegations of inappropriate and coercive behavior, including sending inappropriate text messages to a female employee. Although he was cleared of wrongdoing in two internal investigations, the scandal created reputational damage and internal divisions, with the Austrian faction of Red Bull's ownership reportedly favoring his removal. This issue, while not cited as the direct cause, likely weakened his position.
