Why is MLB umpire Pat Hoberg dismissed by Major League Baseball authority?

By MyKhel Staff

In a shocking turn of events, the Major League Baseball (MLB) terminated the contract of umpire Pat Hoberg.

MLB dismissed umpire Pat Hoberg following an investigation into his involvement with sports betting.

Why is Pat Hoberg dismissed by MLB?

A probe on Pat Hoberg revealed that Hoberg shared legal sports betting accounts with a friend, a professional poker player, who placed bets on baseball games.

Although there was no evidence that Hoberg personally bet on baseball or manipulated game outcomes, he deleted electronic messages pertinent to the investigation. MLB deemed these actions as failures to uphold the sport's integrity and exercised poor judgment.

A close friend of Hoberg made 141 bets on MLB matches during 2019, who has been termed as Individual A in an MLB report. There were 8 bets placed in five matches in 2021, in which Hoberg was either an umpire or a review official.

Initially decided on May 31, 2024, Hoberg's termination was upheld after an appeal. He has expressed remorse and taken full responsibility for his actions, and he is eligible to apply for reinstatement in 2026.

"I take full responsibility for the errors in judgment that are outlined in today's statement (by MLB). Those errors will always be a source of shame and embarrassment to me," Hoberg said.

This incident underscores MLB's robust enforcement of its gambling policies. Commissioner Rob Manfred emphasized the importance of protecting the game's integrity, stating that any violations of betting rules are taken seriously to maintain public trust in the sport.

Pat Hoberg, 38, began his MLB umpiring career in 2014 and became a full-time staff member in 2017. He was widely regarded for his accuracy, notably achieving a "perfect game" in calling balls and strikes during Game 2 of the 2022 World Series.

The investigation into Hoberg's activities began during spring training in 2024, leading to his removal from on-field duties throughout that season. Despite his denial of personal betting on baseball, the evidence of shared betting accounts and deletion of relevant communications led to his dismissal.
