Winning Ugly Is Actually Fun, Claims Lakers Coach JJ Redick After Close Victory Over Suns

Lakers coach JJ Redick celebrates a narrow 116-114 win over the Suns, emphasising the importance of resilience and teamwork despite mistakes.

Los Angeles Lakers coach JJ Redick expressed his excitement after a tight victory over the Phoenix Suns, stating that "winning ugly is actually really fun." The Lakers managed to fend off a late surge from the Suns to secure a 116-114 win. This victory extended their lead in the Pacific Division by four and a half games. Luka Doncic led Los Angeles with 29 points, while LeBron James contributed 26.

The Lakers had a significant 24-0 run, establishing a 95-77 advantage with less than ten minutes left. However, the Suns fought back, taking the lead with just 12.2 seconds remaining. Dillon Brooks hit a crucial three-pointer for Phoenix but was ejected after a confrontation with James. This incident allowed James to seize the opportunity and clinch the win for Los Angeles.

James not only scored 26 points but also added four assists, two steals, and two blocks. In the final moments, he was fouled by Devin Booker on a three-point attempt with 3.9 seconds left. James made two out of three free throws, contributing significantly to the Lakers' victory.

The rivalry between James and Brooks intensified during this game. Their competitive spirit dates back to the 2023 playoffs when Brooks called James "old." Reflecting on this matchup, James stated, "I just like to compete... We're going to get up in each other's face."

Redick praised his team's resilience despite numerous mistakes throughout the game. He remarked, "Winning ugly is actually really fun because it means you got in the trenches, and you fought." He acknowledged that both he and his team made errors but emphasized their determination not to let those mistakes define them.

Redick expressed his satisfaction with how his team handled adversity during the game. He admitted wishing it hadn't been such a close contest but appreciated the challenge it presented.

This win showcased the Lakers' ability to persevere under pressure and highlighted key performances from both Doncic and James. Their efforts were crucial in maintaining their lead in the division standings.
