AJ Dybantsa Lands No. 1 Pick As Wizards Rally With Draft Strategy
The Washington Wizards used the No. 1 pick in the NBA Draft to take BYU freshman forward AJ Dybantsa, ending speculation about late alternatives. Dybantsa had been the projected top selection since the May 10 draft lottery and Washington followed that expectation.
The decision comes as the Wizards reshape their roster after acquiring Trae Young and Anthony Davis at last season’s trade deadline. Both players saw limited minutes in Washington’s 17-65 finish, yet now sit alongside Dybantsa in a group under reconstruction.

Dybantsa arrives with advanced offensive skills and notable size at 6-foot-9 and 210 pounds. The forward led Division I scoring with 25.5 points per game, shooting 51.0% from the field. Dybantsa also contributed 6.8 rebounds and 3.7 assists while guiding BYU to 23 wins.
Washington has previously owned the No. 1 overall choice twice, selecting Kwame Brown in 2001 and John Wall in 2010. The current roster now blends Dybantsa with young players Alexandre Sarr, Tre Johnson, Kyshawn George, Bilal Coulibaly and Bub Carrington.

The Wizards extended Young on a four-year, $213 million contract, signalling commitment to an experienced playmaker. Former No. 2 pick Alexandre Sarr remains a question after offseason surgery to repair a broken foot, leaving Washington to manage expectations around Sarr’s return and development.
The organisation appears less tied to a single competitive window, instead collecting talent across age groups to climb from the NBA’s lower tier. Young and Davis offer veteran structure, while Dybantsa and the rest of the youthful core shape Washington’s long-term direction.
