Toto Wolff Seeks Mercedes Improvements Following Suspension Upgrade Decision

Toto Wolff expresses optimism for Mercedes' performance after discarding a rear suspension upgrade. With the F1 season resuming, he aims to enhance competitiveness and reclaim winning form.

Mercedes' team principal, Toto Wolff, is eager for a return to winning ways in Formula One as the season resumes at the end of August. The team decided against continuing with a rear suspension upgrade. George Russell had initially performed well, securing top-three finishes in four of the first six races before the upgrade was introduced at Imola.

The decision to remove the upgrade followed Russell's seventh-place finish at Imola. However, it was reintroduced for his victory at the Canadian Grand Prix. Despite this success, Russell faced difficulties in subsequent races, prompting Mercedes to discard the upgrade once more. He then achieved a third-place finish in Hungary.

Wolff Aims for Mercedes Performance Boost

Wolff expressed that the suspension upgrade would be discarded as Mercedes aims for better performance in the latter half of the F1 season. The Dutch Grand Prix on August 31 marks the season's continuation. "We were misled a bit by the Montreal win... we came to the conclusion it needed to come off," Wolff stated.

He further explained that if a new suspension is developed, it will be to enhance speed. The issue with the previous upgrade wasn't immediately apparent; otherwise, it wouldn't have been implemented initially. This highlights Mercedes' commitment to refining their strategy and vehicle performance.

The challenges faced by Mercedes have allowed McLaren drivers Oscar Piastri and Lando Norris to compete fiercely for the championship title. Currently, Russell is fourth in standings, trailing Piastri by 112 points. Wolff remains hopeful that upcoming improvements will enable Russell to challenge Red Bull's Max Verstappen, who is third and 15 points ahead.

Andrew Shovlin, Mercedes' engineering director, noted Budapest's performance as evidence of their car's potential when optimised correctly. "Budapest showed that we've got a good car when we land it in the right place," he said. He anticipates building on race wins as circuits similar to Montreal approach in the remaining ten races.

Mercedes aims to leverage their strengths from past successes like Montreal as they navigate through upcoming races. With strategic adjustments and enhancements, they hope to achieve more highlights throughout this competitive season.
