Bangkok, Aug 8: Rio Olympics 2016 celebrations turned into tragedy in Thailand on Monday (August 8) as the grandmother of a bronze medal winner died.

Sinphet's performance was being watched live by his grandmother Subin Khongthap, 84. After the 20-year-old took bronze, celebrations started. However, soon joy turned into tragedy as Subin collapsed and died, "AFP" news agency reported.

"The initial assumption is that she died from heart failure - but we have to wait for the hospital's result," Somwang Prangprakoan, a police officer in northeastern Surin province, was quoted as saying in the report.

"I'm not sure if she was too excited, or if maybe she was already ill," he added.

Before the Rio event, Subin had said, "I cheer him on, fight fight! I miss my grandson and want him to be successful. He does this for the country to bring the gold medal back.".
