The Boxing Federation of India (BFI) had to make a change in their squad as Sanamacha Chanu (70kg) was dropped from the squad for the Women's World Boxing Championships following concussion injuries and was replaced by Shruti Yadav.
The decision to drop Sanamacha Chanu, reigning national champion in 70kg, was taken after the boxer suffered two concussion injuries in space of three days, post which the boxing federation consulted with its medical team, officials, and high-performance director Bernard Dune before ruling her out.
BFI insider told Mykhel that Sanamacha Chanu suffered a concussion injury three days ago while sparring but didn't get it checked up and aggravated it further. She suffered another concussion injury on Tuesday (March 14), following which the BFI management took the call.
The federation was initially reluctant to drop Sanamacha, who became the youth Asian Champion in 2019 and trained at Mary Kom's academy in Manipur, from the squad as she was seen as a medal contender but decided against it keeping her health in mind.
As per the schedule released on Wednesday, her replacement Shruti Yadav will take on China's Pan Zhou in the opening round.
