The Pakistani javelin thrower could only throw 74.80m to place himself seventh in the 12-man final.

Neeraj Chopra is the centre of attention for one more good reason as the reigning Olympic Champion is now the front-runner to be India's first World Champion in track and field as he competes in the men's javelin throw final in Budapest on Sunday (August 27).
Neeraj Chopra stormed into the javelin throw final of the World Athletics Championships 2023 with a throw of 88.77 metre, which was not just his season best but also way ahead of his rivals during the qualification round. Apart from him, only two other throwers could breach the automatic qualification mark of 83m.
This included Pakistan's Arshad Nadeem, who threw the javelin as far as 86.79 metre for his season best while Czech Republic's Jakub Vadljech threw 83.50m to be the third to get an automatic qualification spot. Reigning World Champion Anderson Peters couldn't make the cut with a dismal show of 78.49m in the final.
Germany's Julian Weber was the second in the lot with a throw of 82.39 metre while another Indian DP Manu was third best with a throw of 81.31m. He was the third Indian to qualify for the World Athletics Championships final in a historic moment as Kishore Jena was the other with a throw 80.55m.
The strong performance by Neeraj Chopra comes after about two-month injury layoff after the Indian star javelin thrower won two Diamond League titles in the 2023 season. It all started with a 88.67m throw in Doha back in May followed by another top spot throw of 87.66m in Laussane in late June.
A muscle strain then kept him out of a couple of other tournaments, namely FBK Games and Paavo Nurmi Games. The bright start during the qualification round meant fans are hopeful that Neeraj Chopra will finally break the duck of 90m mark while he competes with Arshad Nadeem for the top spot.
