Nassau (Bahamas), May 3: A formidable contingent of 15 Indian athletes will be eager to leave a mark in the picturesque Nassau, as it aims to secure spots in the Paris Olympics across three events during the two-day World Athletics Relays Bahamas 24, beginning this Saturday (May 4).
The Indian men's 4x400 relay team has been gaining momentum lately, showcasing stellar performances at the 2021 Olympics in Tokyo and challenging the USA's dominance at the World Championships in Budapest last August. Their prowess was further validated by clinching gold at the Hangzhou Asian Games with an impressive run of 3:01.58.

Buoyed by their stellar achievements last year, India aims to surpass its national and Asian record of 2:59.05 seconds set by Muhammed Anas Yahiya, Amoj Jacob, Muhammed Ajmal, and Rajesh Ramesh in Budapest. However, achieving this feat won't be easy, considering their best performance this season stands at 3:05.71 seconds, nearly four seconds behind their gold medal-winning run in Hangzhou.
In accordance with the World Relay format for Paris, the top two teams in each heat on Saturday will progress to the final the following day, securing quotas for the Paris 2024 Olympics in the process. Olympic Lane seeding positions will be determined during the Sunday finals, with teams vying for medals.
The Indian contingent will compete in men's, women's, and mixed 4x400m relays, with the men's team having the best chance to qualify for Paris based on their stellar performances last year.
The Indian men's 4x400m relay team comprises eight members, including the Asian Games gold medalists Amoj Jacob, Muhammad Anas Yahiya, Muhammad Ajmal, and Rajesh Ramesh, alongside Rajiv Arokia, Noah Nirmal Tom, Yashas Palaksha, and Avinash Krishna Kumar.
India has also fielded a seasoned seven-member squad for the women's 4x400m relay event, led by multiple Asian Games gold medalist MR Poovamma. The team also includes Vithya Ramraj, Aishwarya Mishra, Prachi, Subha Venkatesan, Rupal, and Jyothika Sri Dandi.
The mixed 4x400m relay event holds high hopes for India following their silver medal-winning performance at the Hangzhou Asian Games.
With 32 teams competing in the men's 4x400m relay, 27 teams in the women's event, and 30 teams in the mixed event, the competition promises to be fierce and exhilarating.
The mixed 4x400m Olympic qualifying round 1 will commence at 7:05 PM local time on Saturday, May 4 i.e. 4:35 AM Sunday, May 4 IST, while the men's 4x400m final will mark the conclusion of the competition at 10:20 PM on Sunday, May 5 i.e. 7:50 AM on Sunday, May 5.
