Indian boxing sensation Nitu Ghanghas, often hailed as the 'next Mary Kom,' is setting her sights on a new challenge by transitioning from the 48kg category to the Olympic-standard 51kg division. Known for her aggressive style, power, and speed, the Haryana southpaw continues to draw comparisons to the legendary Mary Kom.
Nitu's accolades, including a gold medal at the 2023 Women's Boxing World Championships in New Delhi and a Commonwealth Games triumph, have firmly established her as a prominent figure in Indian boxing.

Her victory against formidable opponents, such as Kazakh boxer Alua Balkibekova in the semi-finals and Mongolia's Lutsaikhany Altantsetseg in the World Championships final, highlighted her unrelenting determination and skill. These achievements earned her the prestigious Arjuna Award in 2024, a recognition she views as a motivational milestone.
Expressing her gratitude, Nitu stated, "I am very happy to receive the Arjuna Award. It will give me a lot of motivation and confidence for upcoming tournaments. I was hopeful, given my achievements, and receiving this honor has been fulfilling."
The decision to switch to the 51kg category stems from strategic considerations. While the 48kg division is not part of the Paris 2024 Olympics, competing in the 51kg category opens new opportunities.
Nitu shared her plans: "My next competition is the Nationals in Madhya Pradesh, likely in February or March. After that, I will transition to the 51kg category." Despite her efforts, the journey to Paris 2024 has not been without hurdles.
Nitu initially moved to the 54kg category but faced stiff competition, with Preeti Pawar ultimately securing India's spot in the division. However, Nitu remains undeterred, ready to embrace her new challenge and carve her path to Olympic glory.
Boxing was not part of the initial program for the Los Angeles Olympics, and a decision on its inclusion is still awaited. With the sport's future as an Olympic event hanging in the balance, the 24-year-old boxer is preparing to compete in the new category.
