World Chess Champion Gukesh D Returns to Chennai to Heroic Welcome

By MyKhel Staff

Chennai witnessed a jubilant scene on Monday as newly-crowned world chess champion D Gukesh returned home to an enthusiastic reception. The 18-year-old became the youngest-ever world champion by defeating China's Ding Liren 7.5-6.5 in Singapore.

He was greeted at the airport by hundreds of fans and officials from the Tamil Nadu government and the National Chess Federation. Tamil Nadu Sports Secretary Atulya Mishra welcomed Gukesh with a bouquet, representing the state's pride in his remarkable achievement.

Reflecting on his historic victory, Gukesh said, "It's amazing. Your support gave me a lot of energy. It's a great feeling to win the world championship." He expressed gratitude to his supporters and acknowledged the role of the Chennai Chess Olympiad in his journey to becoming world champion.

Gukesh's triumph has made him only the second Indian to claim the world chess championship title, following in the footsteps of the legendary Viswanathan Anand. The former world champion had a hand in mentoring Gukesh through his academy.

He played a crucial role in shaping the young prodigy's career. Gukesh's victory also shattered a decades-long record held by Russia's Garry Kasparov, making him the youngest-ever world chess champion.

Tamil Nadu Honors Its Chess Prodigy

The Tamil Nadu government has announced a grand felicitation ceremony for Gukesh, set to take place at Kalaivanar Arangam in Chennai on December 17. In recognition of his historic achievement, the state will bestow a cash prize of ₹5 crore on the young champion.

A student of Velammal School, Gukesh credited the consistent encouragement from his mentors, supporters, and family for his success. "Ding Liren played brilliantly," he said, lauding his opponent, "but I am happy to have brought the trophy home."

Gukesh's historic win has not only made India proud but also solidified Tamil Nadu's legacy as a chess powerhouse. The rapturous welcome he received on his return reflects the nation's admiration for its new chess icon, who now stands tall as a symbol of determination and excellence.
