World U20 Championships: Nitin Gupta's Unbeaten Run Makes Him India's Brightest Medal Hope

New Delhi, Aug 6: Indian race walking has quietly produced some remarkable talents over the years, and the latest name demanding attention is Nitin Gupta.

Still in the U20 ranks, the Uttar Pradesh youngster has emerged as one of the brightest prospects in world race walking after a stunning run of performances that has established him as a genuine medal contender in 5000m race walk at the ongoing World Athletics U-20 Championships in Oregon.

Nitin enters the global event carrying extraordinary momentum. He is the only U-20 athlete in the world this season to have broken the coveted 19-minute barrier in the men's 5000m race walk, producing a sensational 18:54.37 at the Junior Federation Cup in Tumkur, Karnataka.

The performance not only highlighted his exceptional endurance and speed but also underlined why he is regarded as one of the favourites for the world title.

His dominance has not been limited to domestic competition. Earlier this year, the 18-year-old captured the Asian U-20 Championships gold medal in Hong Kong, winning the 5000m race walk in 19:47.49.

More impressively, he has remained unbeaten throughout the season, winning every race he has contested and building an aura of consistency rarely seen in junior athletics.

Nitin's rise has been nothing short of remarkable. His breakthrough began in 2025 when he announced himself on the continental stage with a silver medal in the 5km race walk at the Asian U-18 Championships.

That same year, he rewrote the record books by shattering the Indian U-18 national record, becoming the first Indian ever to complete the 5km race walk in under 20 minutes.

He also claimed the 10km race walk title at the Junior Federation Cup, setting another national record in the process. His upward trajectory had actually started even earlier. At the previous Junior Federation Cup, Nitin produced a landmark performance in the men's 10km race walk, clocking 39:46.78 to win gold while breaking Amit Khatri's national record of 40:40.97, which had stood since 2021.

It was a performance that announced the arrival of one of India's most exciting young endurance athletes. Behind Nitin's remarkable success is one of the most respected figures in Indian race walking Basanta Bahadur Rana.

A former Olympian and national record holder, Rana represented India at the London 2012 Olympic Games and competed in 14 major international championships during an outstanding career that spanned more than a decade.

Since retiring from competition, Rana has become one of India's most influential athletics coaches.
