Wrestling Federation of India Senior Open 2026: Deepak Punia Clinches 92kg Gold As Freestyle Events Conclude In Gonda

The Wrestling Federation of India closed the men's freestyle events. This was at the Senior Open Ranking Tournament 2026 in Gonda. Bouts took place at Nandininagar Mahavidyalaya on 11 May 2026. A total of 593 wrestlers competed across set weight groups.

Haryana wrestler Deepak Punia won gold in the 92kg class. He beat Raja of Haryana in the semifinal round. He then defeated Vansh, also from Haryana, in the final. The win gave Punia the top national ranking in his division.

In the 125kg freestyle category, Rohit from Haryana claimed bronze. He edged past Anirudh, also from Haryana, in Match 179. That close win knocked Anirudh out of the draw. Rohit later secured the podium place in the heavyweight bracket.

Greco-Roman bouts have now entered the key stages. In the 82kg group, Umesh advanced from the quarterfinals. He secured a place in the semifinals. At 87kg, Sagar, Manoj Kumar, Manav Sharma and Tejpal won. Their quarterfinal wins fixed the four semifinal spots.

The heavier Greco-Roman classes also saw clear progress. At 97kg, Abhimanu and Ashish reached the gold medal bout. Both confirmed their final places after earlier wins. In the 130kg field, Mehar Singh moved into the title match. His progress sets up another key contest.

WFI President Shri Sanjay Singh praised the freestyle sessions. He said, "The conclusion of the freestyle events today showcased exceptional skill, highlighted by Deepak Punia's commendable run to secure the 92kg gold. As the Greco-Roman matches intensify, we continue to see the high calibre and depth of our domestic athletes."

The 57kg freestyle medals went to Sagar with gold. Rupesh took silver, while Lakshay and Sahil earned bronze. At 61kg, Abhishek secured gold, and Bhuvanesh claimed silver. Vivek and Sandeep shared the bronze positions in that lighter category.

In the 65kg group, gold went to Sawan Satish. Udit won silver, with Ajay and Abhishek Dha taking bronze. At 70kg, Anuj Kumar earned gold and Tejveer Singh silver. Bronze medals went to Rakesh Kumar and Naveen in that weight.

Yash won gold at 74kg, ahead of silver medallist Sourabh Sehr. Bronze medals here went to Naveen, Nishant, and Ruhi. In the 79kg division, Naveen took gold and Sachin silver. Bronze places were secured by Ritik Rana and Parvinder in that class.

Deepak claimed gold at 86kg, with silver for Sahil Dalal. Bronze medals went to Pushpender D and Aniket. At 92kg, medals went to gold winner Deepak Punia and silver medallist Vansh. Raja and Robin Singh shared bronze in that category.

In the 97kg freestyle group, gold went to Prthivraj. Silver was won by Parveen Kumar, with Vishal and Ramdhan taking bronze. The 125kg medals went to gold winner Shubham Dhil and silver medallist Chirag. Rohit and Karandeep completed the podium with bronze.
