WTT Star Contender Goa 2024: Top-5 International Table Tennis Stars

The second edition of the prestigious international table tennis tournament, WTT Star Contender Goa, is set to take place at Peddem Indoor Stadium in Mapusa, Goa, from January 23 to 28.

The event promises an enhanced experience for fans, featuring 17 Top-20 paddlers vying for the title. Co-hosted by Stupa Sports Analytics and Ultimate Table Tennis, under the guidance of the Table Tennis Federation of India, the tournament is a major attraction.

WTT 1

Hugo Calderano (World No. 6, Brazil)

Hugo Calderano, currently ranked World No. 6, is a major highlight of the upcoming WTT Star Contender Goa 2024. Originating from Brazil, the 27-year-old is renowned for his explosive playing style and impressive agility. Achieving a career-best ranking of three in January 2022, Calderano made history as the first Pan American player to secure a Top-5 spot globally.

Additionally, he became the inaugural Brazilian and Latin American to reach the quarter-finals in Olympic Games table tennis. In 2023, Calderano achieved notable victories, triumphing in WTT Contender Durban and WTT Contender Doha. Notably, he became the first-ever three-time consecutive table tennis champion at the Pan American Games. With a consistent global performance record, Calderano emerges as a formidable contender for the men's singles title in India's premier international table tennis tournament.

WTT 2

Yubin Shin (World No. 9, Korea Republic)

Regarded as a prodigy in Korea, 19-year-old Yubin Shin joins the WTT Star Contender Goa 2024 after a stellar 2023, securing four medals, including one gold and three bronze, at the Hangzhou Asian Games. Noteworthy victories at WTT Contender Lagosand and WTT Contender Lima further underscore her prowess.

Emerging as a rising star in women's table tennis, Shin's adaptability and ability to perform under pressure make her a formidable contender in the women's singles category. She is set to participate in women's doubles alongside Jihee Jeon and mixed doubles with Jonghoon Lim. Despite a round-of-32 finish in the previous edition, Shin aims for redemption and eyes the title in Goa.

WTT 3

Felix Lebrun (World No. 8, France)

Keep an eye on the emerging talent, 17-year-old Felix Lebrun, in the upcoming tournament. Part of the new generation of skilled players, Felix's dynamic playing style and strategic abilities have garnered attention. Securing a bronze medal in doubles at the World Tour Finals 2023 and another in the team event of the European Championships 2023 showcase his early success.

Notably, Felix's brother, World No. 23 Alexis, will also participate in the tournament. Having reached the semi-finals in the last edition, the French youngster aims for an improved performance in the WTT Star Contender Goa 2024, also featuring in the mixed doubles event alongside Prithika Pavade.

WTT 4

Dimitrij Ovtcharov (World No. 13, Germany)

Dimitrij Ovtcharov, the former World No. 1 and a veteran from Germany, brings his wealth of experience to the WTT Star Contender Goa 2024. With an illustrious career, Ovtcharov boasts six Olympic medals, including singles bronze in 2012 and 2020, alongside victories in the World Tour, Men's World Cup, European championships, and German National Championships.

Currently ranked 13th globally, Ovtcharov is renowned for his distinctive backhand and iconic serve, making him a formidable opponent. Making his debut at the WTT Star Contender Goa, the 35-year-old is expected to pose a strong challenge in the men's singles category, adding a touch of seasoned expertise to the tournament.

WTT 5

Cheng I-Ching (World No. 18, Chinese Taipei)

Chinese Taipei's Cheng I-Ching, last edition's runner-up, is determined to clinch the title in the upcoming WTT Star Contender Goa. Cheng will not only participate in the women's singles event but also team up with Ye Jhun Li for the women's doubles.

Currently ranked 18th globally, Cheng is a celebrated player who has played a pivotal role in Chinese Taipei's remarkable growth in table tennis. Her achievements include winning mixed doubles bronze at the Tokyo Olympics, contributing to Chinese Taipei's bronze at the 2016 and 2022 World Championships, and securing a singles silver medal in the 2016 World Cup. Her return to Goa promises fierce competition and pursuit of victory.

The qualifying rounds of the tournament are slated for January 23-24, while the semi-finals and finals are set to take place on January 27 and 28, respectively.
