Xander Schauffele Confident Of His Edge As Reigning Champion At The Open Championship

Xander Schauffele, the defending champion of The Open Championship, aims to leverage his experience for success despite recent challenges. He seeks to reclaim the Claret Jug after a difficult season marred by injury.

Xander Schauffele, last year's Open Championship winner, feels his past success at the event could be beneficial if he finds himself in contention again. Schauffele secured two major titles last year, first at the PGA Championship and then with a remarkable victory at Royal Troon. He aims to become the first player since Padraig Harrington to win consecutive Open Championships.

Despite his previous triumphs, Schauffele has faced challenges this season due to a rib injury in December. This injury limited him to just one appearance early in 2025. His performances in this year's majors have been mixed, with a joint-eighth finish at the Masters and a tied-12th place at the U.S. Open. However, he struggled during his title defence at the PGA Championship, finishing joint-28th.

Schauffele Confident Ahead of The Open Championship

Schauffele acknowledges that regaining rhythm has been difficult this season. His T8 finish at the Scottish Open marked only his second top-10 result of the year. Yet, he remains optimistic about his chances if he can get into contention. "Coming here, I feel like I'm trying to relearn this golf course," he said.

Schauffele is still adapting to links golf, which presents unique challenges such as varying grass conditions and unpredictable weather. He noted that understanding how the ball reacts on different surfaces is crucial. "Links golf is a mentality," Schauffele explained, emphasising the importance of maintaining a positive attitude in adverse weather conditions.

Reflecting on his recent experiences, Schauffele mentioned that windy conditions helped him improve his ball shaping skills. He found it beneficial for understanding his game better when shots didn't go as planned. Despite handing back the Claret Jug on Monday, Schauffele is determined to reclaim it soon.

"If I can get myself in the mix is when I think I would have an advantage," Schauffele stated confidently. He believes that being close to the lead would allow him to leverage his experience effectively. "That's where my biggest edge would be."

The American golfer joins an elite group of six other Americans who have won back-to-back Open Championships: Bobby Jones, Walter Hagen, Arnold Palmer, Lee Trevino, Tom Watson and Tiger Woods. Achieving this feat would further cement Schauffele's place among golfing greats.

As Schauffele continues to navigate through challenges and adapt his game for links courses, he remains focused on regaining top form. His determination and past successes suggest that he could indeed be a formidable contender once more in upcoming tournaments.
