Year Ender 2024: A Look Back At Superlek’s 49-Second Finish Of Jonathan Haggerty

By Mike Joseph

ONE Championship organized more than 50 events in 2024, filled with action-packed matchup across multiple disciplines. There were numerous knockouts, occurring everywhere from the early stages to the dying seconds of the final round.

Combat sports fans were treated to an absolute banger of fights that will be etched in their memories for a long time. But as the year ends, we look back at one unforgettable knockout that stood out among many.

Superlek Kiatmoo9 reacts after stopping Jonathan Haggerty

Two-division, two-sport ONE World Champion Superlek Kiatmoo9 knocked out Jonathan Haggerty with an elbow in just 49 seconds. This much-awaited fight took place in the main event of ONE 168: Denver in the United States in September 2024, where Haggerty failed to defend his ONE Bantamweight Muay Thai World Title.

The pundits and fans were expecting a tight contest between Haggerty's punches and Superlek's famous kicks, but it was a destructive elbow from the pound-for-pound striking great that rocked the Brit's world.

Haggerty started the fight with aggression, attempting to land a kick and then punches. The 27-year-old went for a quick left jab, while Superlek tried to counter with an elbow but couldn't connect.

After few seconds, the Englishman charged in with a one-two combination, but this time the Thai superstar landed a picture-perfect elbow right down the middle. The impact of elbow was such that Haggerty couldn't answer referee's eight-count, and match was waved off at 49 seconds into the first round.

With that, Superlek became a two-division and two-sport ONE World Champion, strengthening his position as the number one pound-for-pound striker in the world. The early and unexpected ending has opened the doors for a rematch, and if it happens in 2025, then it would be a treat for fight fans.

While they await a rematch, both Superlek and Haggerty will be defending their titles in the first two numbered events of 2025. Superlek defends his Bantamweight Muay Thai World title against Nico Carrillo at ONE 170, and Haggerty puts the Bantamweight Kickboxing World title on the line against Wei Rui at ONE 171.
