13-year-old wins European diving title

Eindhoven, March 25: A 13-year-old British boy has won the 10-metre platform diving competition at the European swimming championships in Holland.

Thomas Daley blushed, jumped up and down, and put his hands over his face in delight as Germany's Sascha Klein failed to overtake him in the standings with his sixth and final dive in Eindhoven today. Daley had virtually assured himself of the victory with his fifth dive, a back three-and-a-half somersault with tuck that scored four maximum 10 points and three 9.5 points. He ultimately finished with 491.95 points.

Klein, European champion in the 10m platform synchro competition, was second with 487.60 points, and Francesco dell'Uomo of Italy took third with 481.30.

"It was just an absolutely amazing experience," Daley said.

"I missed one of my dives and to still be able to get the 10s after that and to still bring myself up to get the gold medal, I really didn't expect it."

Daley, who will become the second-youngest male Olympian in British history after qualifying for Beijing, was only sixth after three rounds.

"Normally I can do that (third) dive a lot better and because I didn't, I did get a bit worried and knew I had to turn it around,'' he said.

"To finish up and be standing on the top of the podium with your national anthem playing is not something that happens every day."
