Yuki moves into second round

By Staff

Chandigarh, Apr 1 (UNI) Talented youngster Yuki Bhambri is among six Indians who have advanced to the singles second round of the 10,000 Dollar India F5 Futures ITF Men's Circuit at the CLTA Stadium here today.

Other Indians moved into next round are top seeded and Davis Cupper Rohan Bopanna, Divij Sharan, Harsh Mankad, Vivek Shokeen and qualifier Virali-Murugesan.

Unpretentious wild card entrant Yuki of Delhi played an all-round game to eliminate John McGahon of Ireland in straight sets 6-3, 6-4 in 75 minutes in a first-round at Centre Court.

Playing a consistent game, Yuki got breaks in the fifth and ninth games to win the first set. McGahon committed a number of unforced errors. He did excel with his strong ground strokes and broke his rival in the third game of the second set to lead 2-1.

In the fourth game, he trailed 15-40 on his serve. He disputed a line-call. With chair umpire Atanu Chakraborty standing firm, McGahon could be heard repeatedly yelling ''idiot''. The Ireland player lost his serve as Yuki broke back to make it two-all.

Trailing 4-5, McGahon led 30-0 on his serve before committing a double fault. With a good return Yuki reduced the margin to 30-40 before making it a deuce. McGahon then surrendered an advantage. Once again another deuce was called before Yuki got the advantage.

While Yuki kept his cool while keeping the ball in, McGahon hit a long one whch ended his singles campaign as Yuki broke him in the 10th game for game, set and match.

Playing an all-round game, top seed and Davis Cupper Rohan Bopanna ended the challenge of local hero Vijayant Malik, a trainee of Chandigarh Lawn Tennis Association at centre court.

The score 6-3, 6-4 is not the true index of the match as Bopanna was calling the tune during the 63-minute contest.
