One-Year Deal? The Big Decision Facing Carlos Sainz and Williams

Carlos Sainz is focused on extending his stay with Williams, with negotiations between the Spaniard, his management and the British team continuing ahead of the 2027 Formula 1 season.

Sainz's future has been the subject of increasing speculation during the summer break, with the 31-year-old linked with potential moves elsewhere on the grid. However, according to MARCA, his current priority is negotiating the terms of a renewal with Williams, with an announcement potentially coming soon.

Carlos Sainz

Sainz joined Williams at the end of 2024 after leaving Ferrari, with the team's expected progress under the new regulations a major factor in his decision. The 2026 season, however, has not delivered the competitive step forward the team had hoped for.

After 11 Grands Prix, Williams has struggled to consistently reach Q2 or fight for points, while the team has also faced questions over why its performance has fallen short of expectations.

Carlos Sainz's Williams future

Sainz had previously indicated that he would use the summer break as a point to assess his future with Williams.

"I've always said I would wait until the summer to sit down with my team and think about it and discuss with them, along with James (Vowles) and the rest, the future of the team and my future within it," he said before the break.

Those discussions are now understood to be taking place.

Sainz's position is complicated by Williams' current performance. The Spaniard is regarded as one of the drivers extracting the most from the car, but the team's lack of progress has raised questions over whether remaining with the outfit is the best option for the next stage of his career.

Why Carlos Sainz could prefer a short-term deal

According to MARCA, Sainz's preference could be to extend his Williams contract for just one year.

Such an arrangement would allow him to remain with the team while keeping his options open for a potentially more competitive opportunity beyond 2027.

Audi has been mentioned among the teams interested in Sainz for 2027, although the report states that a move there may not currently be possible.

The financial terms of a renewal are also expected to be an important part of the negotiations.

A figure of €30 million per year has been reported elsewhere as Sainz's potential asking price for a 2027 extension. However, MARCA describes that amount as exaggerated, particularly given Williams' financial constraints and the fact that it would represent a substantial increase on Sainz's reported current salary of around €13 million.

When could Carlos Sainz's Williams deal be announced?

The timing of an announcement remains uncertain, but the report suggests that a renewal could be confirmed at any point after Monday.

Ideally, Williams would want clarity before the next round of media commitments at the Dutch Grand Prix, with press conferences scheduled for Thursday at Zandvoort.

For now, however, Sainz's position appears clear: despite the speculation surrounding his future, his immediate focus is on Williams and reaching an agreement that works for both sides.

The bigger question is whether that agreement will provide Sainz with the long-term security of remaining at Williams or the flexibility to keep his options open as Formula 1's 2027 driver market takes shape.
