Why Are F1 Races Getting Shorter In 2027? 305km To 290km Explained
Formula 1 Grands Prix are set to become shorter in 2027, with teams unanimously supporting a proposal to reduce the standard race distance from 305km to approximately 290km.
The change is not being made simply to make races shorter. It is largely a consequence of the complicated transition to the next phase of F1's power-unit regulations, with changes to the balance between combustion and electrical power creating an unexpected problem around fuel capacity.

Rather than allowing different races to have different distances, and potentially turning some into fuel-saving exercises, F1 has opted for a uniform reduction across the calendar.
If formally approved, most Grands Prix will lose roughly two to three laps from their current distances next season.
So, what exactly is changing?
For decades, the standard F1 Grand Prix has been defined by distance rather than a fixed number of laps.
The sporting regulations require a race to cover the fewest number of complete laps necessary to exceed 305km. That means the number of laps varies from circuit to circuit depending on track length.
So, a shorter circuit requires considerably more laps than a longer one, but the total race distance remains broadly consistent.
From 2027, that standard will fall from 305km to around 290km.
Monaco is the exception to the existing 305km rule because of its unique circuit layout and is currently capped at 260km. It is also expected to be shortened under the new approach.
The change still needs to go through the formal approval process before becoming part of the 2027 sporting regulations. The proposal must be approved by the F1 Commission before being ratified by the FIA World Motor Sport Council.
Why is F1 shortening the races?
The answer begins with the 2026 power-unit regulations.
The current technical rules introduced a much greater reliance on electrical power, with the internal combustion engine and electric component contributing roughly equally to the overall power output.
However, the driving characteristics created by that balance have proved controversial. Drivers have complained about the need to constantly manage energy harvesting and deployment, while fluctuating battery states can produce what has been described as a "yo-yo" effect during races.
F1 stakeholders have therefore been working towards giving the internal combustion engine a greater share of the overall power contribution.
The longer-term plan is understood to move towards a 60:40 split in favour of the combustion engine from 2028.
But an interim change is coming in 2027, with the balance moving to approximately 58:42.
That sounds like a relatively small adjustment, but it has a significant knock-on effect.
Why does more engine power mean more fuel?
The internal combustion engine needs fuel to produce power.
If the combustion engine is being asked to contribute more to the car's total output, the engine needs to be supplied with more fuel.
That creates a problem because the teams designed their 2026 cars and fuel systems around the original regulations.
Some teams had intended to carry their existing chassis concepts into 2027 rather than designing entirely new cars. Increasing fuel capacity would require changes to the packaging of the car, potentially creating additional design and development costs.
F1 has already made allowances within the cost cap for teams carrying over their chassis to make modifications.
But there is another problem: weight.
Why not simply put bigger fuel tanks in the cars?
That would seem like the obvious solution, but it is not that simple.
Fuel is heavy, and every additional kilogram carried by a car affects performance.
The current-generation F1 cars are already subject to significant weight concerns despite being around 30kg lighter than their predecessors.
Adding substantially more fuel capacity could therefore undermine one of the fundamental objectives of the new technical era: making the cars lighter and more efficient.
Teams were consequently faced with a choice.
They could carry more fuel and accept the additional weight and packaging compromises, or reduce the amount of fuel the cars need to carry by shortening the races.
The latter option ultimately became the preferred solution.
Why not shorten only certain races?
That was initially one of the ideas on the table.
The races most likely to create fuel-related problems could have been shortened by a couple of laps, while other Grands Prix retained their existing distances.
There was also discussion about limiting cars to a single formation lap before the race, reducing the amount of fuel consumed before the actual Grand Prix began.
But that approach created another problem.
If some races were significantly shorter than others, teams would have to adapt their fuel strategies from weekend to weekend. More importantly, certain Grands Prix could have turned into fuel-economy contests.
Instead of drivers being encouraged to race at maximum intensity, teams could have been forced to manage fuel consumption to reach the chequered flag.
That would have undermined the very reason for changing the regulations in the first place.
Why a universal 290km distance makes more sense
The solution was to make the reduction universal.
Rather than identifying individual races as fuel-critical, the FIA and teams agreed that having the same basic distance across the season was the cleaner option.
That means the reduction becomes a characteristic of the 2027 regulations rather than something that is highlighted at selected Grands Prix.
Most races will therefore be around two to three laps shorter, depending on the circuit.
That consistency is important for both teams and drivers.
Engineers can build their strategies around a common race-distance target, while drivers will not have to approach certain circuits differently simply because their Grand Prix has been shortened to accommodate the limitations of the power unit.
How much time will races actually lose?
The reduction is around 15km, but the impact on the clock will vary from circuit to circuit.
A lap at Monza, for example, takes significantly less time than a lap at Monaco or Singapore, so removing two laps at one circuit does not represent the same amount of racing time as removing two laps somewhere else.
As a broad expectation, though, fans are looking at a relatively small reduction in overall race time rather than a dramatic shortening of Grands Prix.
The more important change may be what happens within those remaining laps.
A shorter race requires less fuel overall, which should reduce the pressure created by the revised power-unit regulations.
What does this mean for the cars?
The biggest impact is likely to be on fuel strategy and car design rather than the fundamental way an F1 car looks or behaves.
Teams will have to optimise their fuel loads around the shorter distance while balancing the increased fuel-flow demands of the combustion engine.
The reduction also gives teams some breathing room with regard to fuel-tank packaging.
That matters because the 2027 cars are not simply being carried over unchanged from 2026. Aerodynamic regulation changes mean teams have reasons to modify their chassis anyway, even if some had originally planned a more conservative approach.
The shorter race distance reduces one of the pressures that would otherwise force teams to accommodate significantly more fuel.
Will the racing actually be different?
Potentially, yes, although not necessarily because the races are 15km shorter.
The bigger issue is fuel management.
The alternative to shortening the races would have been to ask teams to carry more fuel or to impose race-by-race compromises. That could have encouraged conservative driving in certain events, with drivers having to protect fuel rather than attack.
A standard 290km distance should make that problem more predictable.
There will still be energy management because of the 2027 power-unit regulations, but the shorter races should reduce the amount of fuel required to complete them.
In theory, that should allow drivers to spend more of the race operating closer to the performance limit rather than worrying about whether they can make the fuel last.
Is this a completely new idea for F1?
Not at all.
Formula 1 has changed the length of its races before.
In 1958, a broader package of sporting changes, including a ban on alcohol-based fuels, reduced the maximum Grand Prix distance from 500km or three hours to 300km and two hours.
Race length has continued to evolve alongside changes in technology, fuel, safety and the characteristics of the cars.
The 2027 reduction should therefore be viewed within that longer history rather than as an unprecedented move to shorten Formula 1 races.
What happens to Monaco?
Monaco is already treated differently.
The Monte Carlo race is capped at 260km because its unusually short circuit would otherwise require an excessive number of laps to meet the standard Grand Prix distance.
Under the proposed changes, Monaco is also expected to be shortened, although its existing special status means the calculation is different from the other races.
It will remain the shortest Grand Prix in terms of total distance.
Is the 290km distance permanent?
Not necessarily.
The current agreement is understood to apply specifically to 2027.
That is because the shorter races are effectively a compromise designed to deal with the consequences of the relatively late changes to the power-unit regulations.
Further fuel-flow changes are expected for 2028 as F1 moves towards the planned 60:40 combustion-to-electric balance.
Depending on how those changes affect the cars, teams could decide to retain the shorter race distance beyond 2027.
Equally, if the fuel and packaging problems are resolved, the distance could eventually be revisited.
What does it mean for F1 fans?
For spectators, the most obvious change will be simple: Grands Prix will finish a little sooner.
But the real intention is not to reduce the amount of racing for its own sake.
F1 is attempting to prevent the new power-unit regulations from creating a situation in which drivers have to spend too much of a Grand Prix managing fuel and energy rather than racing.
The 2027 change is therefore a compromise between competing priorities: more combustion-engine power, reasonable fuel capacity, controlling car weight, avoiding unnecessary redesign costs and preserving the quality of the racing.
A 290km Grand Prix may look like a significant change on paper, but the actual difference for fans is likely to be relatively modest.
The more important question will be whether the shorter distance helps solve one of the central criticisms of the new-generation cars: that managing their energy systems can sometimes become as important as actually driving them.
For now, F1's teams have decided that a shorter but consistent Grand Prix is preferable to longer races in which fuel conservation could become the dominant strategy.
