Just 0.054 Seconds: Max Verstappen Edges Leclerc for Singapore GP Pole

Max Verstappen claimed pole position for the Singapore Grand Prix with a lap of 1:31.373, edging Charles Leclerc by just 0.054 seconds in a closely contested qualifying session at Marina Bay on Saturday.

The Red Bull driver secured his first pole in Singapore after a chaotic sprint earlier in the day, which saw Verstappen take victory following George Russell's crash and a final-lap collision between McLaren team-mates Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri. Lewis Hamilton qualified third for Ferrari, while Kimi Antonelli took fourth for Mercedes.

Qualifying began 30 minutes later than scheduled after torrential rain delayed the sprint, which itself ran behind schedule in difficult conditions. The FIA regulations require a three-hour gap between the sprint and qualifying, forcing the revised start time.

Max Verstappen Beats Leclerc to Singapore GP Pole

Verstappen set the benchmark with a 1:31.373 and held on through the final runs to secure pole position. Leclerc mounted a late challenge but finished just 0.054 seconds behind, setting up a closely matched battle at the front for Sunday's race.

Hamilton had briefly looked capable of challenging for pole after topping Q2 and producing a strong opening run in the final segment. However, he could not improve sufficiently on his final attempt and was ultimately beaten by his Ferrari team-mate.

The result gives Verstappen an opportunity to convert pole into a first Singapore Grand Prix victory. Despite winning the sprint earlier in the day, the Dutchman had made clear that his focus remained on Sunday's main event.

## Lewis Hamilton Leads Q2 as Ferrari Shows Pace

Hamilton delivered one of the standout performances of qualifying, topping Q2 ahead of Verstappen and Norris. It was the first time he had led a Q2 session during the 2026 season.

The Ferrari driver continued to show strong pace in the final segment but was unable to overhaul Verstappen's benchmark. Leclerc's late improvement pushed Hamilton down to third, leaving Ferrari with both cars in the top three.

Antonelli qualified fourth for Mercedes, while Norris completed the top five for McLaren.

## George Russell Qualifies Sixth Despite Penalty

Russell managed to continue in qualifying after his sprint crash, with Mercedes working to repair his damaged car. He qualified sixth, but his result will not translate into his starting position because he is set to start from the back of the grid following an engine-related penalty.

Russell had been leading the sprint before losing control at the end of the opening lap and crashing into the barriers. His retirement handed the advantage to Verstappen and cost him the opportunity to score sprint points.

Antonelli, meanwhile, benefited from Russell's retirement in the sprint, finishing fourth and extending his championship advantage over his team-mate.

## Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri Recover After Sprint Collision

Norris qualified fifth, ahead of Russell and Piastri, after the two McLaren drivers collided during the closing stages of the sprint.

Norris attempted to pass Piastri on the inside into Turn 5 on the final lap, with both cars spinning after contact. Norris dropped to eighth in the sprint, while Piastri finished 14th.

The collision overshadowed McLaren's sprint and left the team facing questions ahead of qualifying. Norris nevertheless recovered to place his car inside the top five, while Piastri qualified seventh.

## What Happened in Q1 and Q2?

Hamilton topped Q1 ahead of Leclerc and Norris, while Isack Hadjar failed to set a time after experiencing another technical problem. The Red Bull driver had already suffered a power-unit issue during the sprint and reported that he had lost his gears during qualifying.

Fernando Alonso was among the drivers eliminated in Q1, alongside Alex Albon, Lance Stroll, Sergio Perez and Valtteri Bottas. Hadjar was also eliminated without a representative lap.

In Q2, Hamilton again set the pace, with Verstappen and Norris joining him among the leading drivers. Nico Hulkenberg, Oliver Bearman, Esteban Ocon, Carlos Sainz, Gabriel Bortoleto and Franco Colapinto were eliminated.

## Singapore GP: What to Expect on Sunday

Verstappen will start Sunday's race from pole, with Leclerc alongside him on the front row and Hamilton in third. With just 0.054 seconds separating the first two drivers, the battle for victory could be closely contested.

Russell's back-of-the-grid penalty alters the picture for Mercedes, while Ferrari will hope to convert its qualifying pace into a strong race result. McLaren will also be under scrutiny after the Norris-Piastri collision in the sprint.

After a rain-disrupted day and a tight qualifying battle, Verstappen has put himself in the strongest position to pursue a Singapore Grand Prix victory.
