Hamilton Plays Down Championship Hopes Ahead Of Dutch Grand Prix

Lewis Hamilton remains hopeful yet realistic about Mercedes' chances in the Formula 1 season's second half, despite a significant points gap and a strong performance streak. With the Dutch Grand Prix approaching, Hamilton and team-mate George Russell aim to maintain momentum amidst challenges.

Lewis Hamilton remains optimistic about Mercedes' performance as the Formula 1 season progresses. Despite his recent success, he downplays the likelihood of competing for the Drivers' Championship. Hamilton has accumulated 95 points in the last five races, placing him sixth overall, 127 points behind Max Verstappen.

Mercedes has experienced a significant improvement since the Monaco Grand Prix in May. They have outperformed all other teams in terms of points. Hamilton secured victories at Silverstone and Spa, while George Russell won at the Austrian Grand Prix, narrowing the gap to Ferrari in the Constructors' Championship.

Hamilton Lowers Title Hopes

This weekend's Dutch Grand Prix offers Hamilton a chance to achieve four consecutive podiums for the first time since 2022. However, he acknowledges that challenging for an eighth world title remains difficult. "No. It would be high hopes," Hamilton said. "But, I mean, if we can continue this kind of performance as we've had the last few races, which has been fantastic."

Hamilton added that starting weekends better could help maintain their current form. He noted McLaren's strength in Belgium but emphasized the need to keep pushing forward.

The final ten races will be Hamilton's last with Mercedes before joining Ferrari alongside Charles Leclerc for 2025. George Russell is uncertain about his teammate for next season, with Prema Racing's Kimi Antonelli being a potential replacement for Hamilton.

Russell currently sits eighth in the Drivers' Championship after a disqualification in Belgium due to an underweight car. Despite this setback, he is confident about Mercedes' prospects for a consistent title push in 2025.

"I think for all of us, it's been a difficult couple of years getting the car into a place where we can consistently fight for victories," Russell said. "But I'm so motivated, so excited for the second half of the season, which is ultimately building up towards 2025."

Looking Ahead to Future Competitions

Russell believes that if the season had started in Montreal, championship standings would look very different now. He sees strong motivation from teams like McLaren and Ferrari to return to the front and anticipates intense competition next year.

"There's no reason why we can't fight," Russell stated. "So for sure, it's not going to be easy, and hopefully we see a good fight on our hands into next year."

The upcoming races will be crucial for both drivers as they aim to build on their recent successes and prepare for future challenges with their respective teams.
