Christian Horner Remains Open To Collaborating With Carlos Sainz At Red Bull Despite Recent Driver Changes

Christian Horner disclosed that Sergio Perez's impressive start to the 2024 Formula One season halted Red Bull's pursuit of Carlos Sainz. Despite this, Horner remains open to collaborating with the Spanish driver in the future. Initially, Sainz was set to be replaced by Lewis Hamilton at Ferrari, prompting him to seek opportunities elsewhere.

Red Bull initially had no vacancies for 2025, with Max Verstappen under contract until 2028 and Perez extending his deal in June. However, Perez's performance declined after a strong start, finishing no higher than fourth in subsequent races. This led Red Bull to replace him with Liam Lawson for the upcoming season.

Horner explained that choosing internal talent over external options like Sainz aligns with their strategy. "Carlos is a great driver, and options still remain open with him in the future," he stated. The team prioritises nurturing young talent through their junior programme, offering a clear path to Formula One.

Perez's form dipped significantly after early podium finishes, ending the season eighth in the constructors' championship. This was his lowest finish since 2019 when he raced for Racing Point. His struggles contributed to Red Bull losing the drivers' championship to McLaren.

Despite winning nine races and securing four Sprint victories, Red Bull faced a significant points gap between their drivers. This impacted their position in the constructors' championship, which McLaren clinched thanks to Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri.

Sainz's Future Prospects and Red Bull's Considerations

Carlos Sainz eventually signed a two-year contract with Williams amid interest from teams like Sauber and Alpine. Horner acknowledged that while there was logic in considering Sainz, they chose to focus on internal development. "We made the choice to look internally and put belief in the junior programme," he noted.

Reflecting on whether Red Bull should have secured the championship or if it influenced Perez's departure, Horner commented on hindsight: "I think there's should've, could've, would've when you look back." He praised McLaren's efforts but highlighted Red Bull's achievements despite challenges.

The decision not to pursue Sainz reflects Red Bull’s commitment to fostering young talent within their ranks. By investing in their junior programme, they aim to provide promising drivers with opportunities at the highest level of motorsport.
