Kimi Antonelli Not Ready for F1 Title? Father of Championship Leader Refuses to Get Carried Away by the Hype

The Formula 1 world may already be talking about Kimi Antonelli as a future world champion, but one person is refusing to get carried away by the hype - his father.

After a stunning start to the 2026 season that has seen the Mercedes youngster win four races in a row and open up a 43-point lead over teammate George Russell, Antonelli has quickly become the favourite for the drivers' championship. At just 19 years old, the Italian is on course to become Formula 1's youngest-ever world champion, eclipsing the record set by Sebastian Vettel in 2010.

Yet while fans and pundits debate whether anyone can stop Antonelli's charge, his father Marco has offered a more measured perspective.

Kimi Antonelli's father admits Toto Wolff believed before he did

Speaking to Formula1.it, Marco Antonelli revealed that Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff was actually the first person to fully believe in his son's potential.

Wolff famously backed Antonelli as Lewis Hamilton's long-term successor and was willing to overlook proven race winners such as Carlos Sainz in favour of promoting the Italian youngster.

But Antonelli's father admitted he was never quite as convinced.

"Well, I have to say that Toto Wolff perhaps believed more than I did in Kimi's growth," Marco said.

"As a father, I'm not too biased. Perhaps I've always been a little sceptical about my son's true potential because you're always afraid he won't be as strong as he should be."

The comments offer a rare glimpse into the mindset of those closest to Antonelli, who has rapidly gone from highly-rated junior prospect to a championship leader in little over a year. "So I'm always a very cautious person when giving positive comments or making proclamations.

"True, Kimi is doing well now, even beyond expectations. But I think he still has to grow: in one year of Formula 1 you can't learn what the other drivers, his rivals, have learned in six, eight or ten years.

Even though only few drivers have ever shown such consistent talent, Antonelli Sr thinks it's too early for his son to become the 'leader' in F1: "Personally, I think he still has a lot to learn, and I think he can only do that in the next few years. It will take him time, that's normal. I think he'll be truly ready in a few years."

Despite the impressive advantage he currently holds over Russell, Marco was quick to remind everyone that Formula 1 remains a brutal learning environment.

Russell has started more than 150 Grands Prix compared to Antonelli's 29 and possesses significantly more experience when it comes to handling the pressures of a title battle.

That reality is one reason Mercedes remain cautious despite their driver's remarkable form.

Lewis Hamilton highlights key Mercedes advantage

Seven-time world champion Lewis Hamilton believes Antonelli is benefiting from something he never had during his own first championship challenge nearly two decades ago.

Hamilton narrowly missed out on the 2007 title during his rookie season with McLaren, losing the championship to Kimi Räikkönen by a single point.

Reflecting on Antonelli's current position, Hamilton pointed to the support structure created by Wolff at Mercedes as a major factor behind the youngster's success.

"I think things were different back then," Hamilton explained.

"I don't think I had the same support system that he has, for example, today in a place that I worked at and worked in."

"Toto did a great job of surrounding you with the right support, and I definitely didn't feel that."

Hamilton explained that while McLaren provided a competitive environment during his rookie campaign, he lacked the guidance and stability that Antonelli currently enjoys.

"The team were nice and everything but there weren't the right elements around to support you, to help you stay stable and guide you," Hamilton added.

"It was pretty intense, especially in my first year. But I wouldn't change it for the world."

Mercedes determined to keep expectations in check

Antonelli's rise has been one of the defining stories of the 2026 season.

The Italian has already collected multiple Formula 1 milestones and appears increasingly comfortable leading a championship fight despite his age. However, Mercedes remain aware that a difficult spell is likely to arrive at some point during the campaign.

With 17 races still remaining, reliability issues, mistakes and changing circuit characteristics could yet swing momentum back towards Russell or the chasing pack.

For now, though, Antonelli continues to impress both inside and outside the paddock.

And while the rest of Formula 1 debates whether the teenager can complete one of the sport's most remarkable title-winning seasons, his father remains focused on keeping expectations grounded.

Perhaps that balance between belief and caution is exactly what Antonelli needs as the biggest challenge of his young career unfolds.
