Lando Norris led the timesheets for McLaren on the first day of Formula One pre-season testing in Bahrain. He clocked the fastest lap, surpassing Mercedes' George Russell by 0.157 seconds. Defending champion Max Verstappen secured third place, while Charles Leclerc finished fourth. Lewis Hamilton, Leclerc's new Ferrari teammate, ended up 13th after completing 70 laps in the morning session.
The afternoon session saw a power outage at the Bahrain International Circuit, extending track time by an hour. This allowed Carlos Sainz, Pierre Gasly, Kimi Antonelli, Liam Lawson, Alex Albon, and Yuki Tsunoda to finish in the top ten. Russell expressed optimism about Mercedes' performance after challenging seasons. "The car is performing well," he noted, adding that conditions in Bahrain are usually hotter.

Russell further commented on the car's performance: "This is the best it has ever felt around Bahrain." He remained cautious but pleased with their progress. "We are not going to get carried away with ourselves, but so far so good," he said. The team had experienced less successful tests in Bahrain previously.
Norris' teammate Oscar Piastri drove during the morning and placed 16th on the timesheets. Despite last season's struggles, Piastri felt optimistic about McLaren's improvements. "The car is feeling pretty good," he stated, aiming to refine its performance further. He acknowledged that several teams looked promising early on but was satisfied with their progress.
Piastri added that they were focusing on gathering valuable data and improving their setup. "It's already looking very close," he remarked, anticipating an exciting F1 season ahead. The team's efforts to enhance their car's competitiveness seem to be paying off as they prepare for upcoming races.
The initial testing day provided insights into each team's readiness for the season. With Norris setting a strong pace and other drivers showing potential, fans can expect thrilling competition as teams continue refining their strategies and vehicles.
