Lewis Hamilton Delivers Brutal Ferrari-Mercedes Comparison After Monaco GP

Lewis Hamilton has identified downforce and traction as the biggest areas where Ferrari trails Mercedes after finishing second to Andrea Kimi Antonelli at the Monaco Grand Prix.

Mercedes continued its dominant start to the 2026 Formula 1 season as Antonelli secured his fifth consecutive victory, extending the Silver Arrows' unbeaten run this year.

Hamilton spent much of the race running in second place and briefly challenged Antonelli at a standing restart following a late red flag. However, despite a strong launch, the seven-time world champion was unable to get alongside the Mercedes driver and watched him pull away once racing resumed.

Reflecting on the race afterwards, Hamilton admitted that Monaco offered a valuable opportunity to directly assess the strengths of Mercedes' package compared to Ferrari's SF-26.

"Unfortunately, we both basically got pretty much the same starts," Hamilton explained.

"I think I gained on him just a little bit and I was almost to his rear wheel, but not enough to pop me in the lead, unfortunately. And then as we got going, I just got to see him pull away."

Lewis Hamilton highlights Mercedes' advantage over Ferrari

Hamilton believes Mercedes currently holds a clear advantage in several key performance areas, particularly in terms of aerodynamic efficiency and traction out of slower corners.

"The performance they have is next level," he said.

"It was a good experience because it gives me a much better idea of where I need to have the team lean and improve, not only from what I'm feeling, but what I'm seeing as well."

The Ferrari driver was particularly impressed by Mercedes' ability to generate grip and maintain traction, describing the difference between the two cars as significant.

"Just general performance. Downforce-wise, clearly they're above us, and then, obviously, the power," Hamilton explained.

"For us here, power's not such an issue. It's just downforce."

"You can see just on traction, those guys were night and day different to us."

Despite Ferrari's current deficit, Hamilton remains optimistic that upgrades currently being developed at Maranello can help close the gap over the coming races.

"Hopefully we've got some performance coming, and the guys are working pretty hard back in the factory, so I hope that they're happy with this result."

Hamilton's runner-up finish allowed him to strengthen his position in the drivers' championship standings, although Ferrari still faces a significant challenge if it hopes to end Mercedes' unbeaten start to the 2026 season.
