Liam Lawson expressed his surprise at being replaced by Red Bull just two weeks into the 2025 F1 season. Promoted from Racing Bulls to race alongside Max Verstappen, Lawson faced challenges in the Australian and Chinese Grands Prix. He did not finish in Australia, leading to his replacement by Yuki Tsunoda. Lawson felt he needed more time to adjust to the top-tier competition.
Lawson shared his thoughts with Sky Sports F1, saying, "It was definitely a shock, honestly. It's not something that I saw coming. The discussions we were having as well, I think, weren't really leaning in this direction, so it was definitely not something that I sort of expected." He added that he would have appreciated more time to adapt.

The 23-year-old driver had only participated in 11 Grands Prix before this season. He found the transition challenging due to limited time in the car. Each session involved adapting to new conditions, which made it difficult for him to settle into a rhythm. Lawson believed that racing on familiar tracks could have helped him adjust better.
Red Bull's team principal acknowledged the team's expectations might have been too high for Lawson at this stage. "Of course, it's horrible because you're taking away someone's dreams and aspirations," he said. However, he emphasized that this decision does not mark the end of Lawson's career.
The team principal explained that concerns shared with engineers led to the decision. They noticed how much Lawson struggled during races in Australia and China. The pressure seemed evident on him, affecting his performance significantly.
The principal noted that while Lawson has talent and might have improved over half a season, Red Bull lacked the luxury of time for such development. Despite this setback, there remains hope for Lawson's future in racing.
Lawson reflected on his brief stint with Red Bull as a learning experience despite its challenges. He remains determined to make the most of any future opportunities that come his way in motorsport.
