Mercedes Team Principal Toto Wolff Confirms No Discussions With Max Verstappen For Future Switch

Toto Wolff of Mercedes confirms there have been no talks with Max Verstappen about joining the team. He expresses confidence in their current drivers, particularly George Russell.

Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff has confirmed that there have been no discussions with Max Verstappen about a possible move to their team. Wolff expressed satisfaction with their current Formula One drivers. George Russell's contract with Mercedes ends this year, and there are rumours about the team wanting to recruit the four-time champion. Russell is currently just six points behind Verstappen in the drivers' standings before the Saudi Arabian Grand Prix.

Wolff praised Russell's performance in 2025, noting his podium finishes in three of the four races so far. He emphasised that Mercedes is not considering other options for their lineup. "I always say I don't flirt outside if I'm happy in the relationship on a professional level," Wolff stated regarding his drivers. "I'm super happy with the line-up we have, I couldn't wish for anything better."

Wolff: No Talks with Verstappen at Mercedes

Red Bull's motorsport consultant Helmut Marko had previously hinted at Verstappen possibly leaving at season's end. However, Red Bull team principal Christian Horner remains confident that Verstappen will stay with them through 2026. This speculation arose after Lewis Hamilton moved to Ferrari, prompting Mercedes to seek a replacement last year.

Instead of Verstappen, Mercedes chose 18-year-old Kimi Antonelli to fill Hamilton's spot. Antonelli has already made history as the youngest F1 driver to lead a race and set the fastest lap. Wolff had shown interest in Verstappen during their search for Hamilton’s successor but ultimately decided on Antonelli.

The upcoming Saudi Arabian Grand Prix sees Verstappen starting from pole position, having outperformed McLaren drivers Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri. Russell will begin from third place on the grid. Wolff highlighted Russell’s achievements by saying, "[Russell]'s been performing in the car to the maximum and is doing great." He also mentioned that George is on par with Max.

As Mercedes continues its journey without seeking external changes, they remain focused on nurturing their current talent. The team's confidence in its existing lineup reflects its strategy of building long-term success through stability and consistent performance.
