MotoGP Portugal Sprint race results: Francesco Bagnaia wins; Ennea Bastianini hurt after crash

By Aditya K Halder

Reigning champion Francesco Bagnaia wrote history for his Ducati by winning the first-ever Sprint race during the Grand Prix of Portugal in Portimao. The 12-lap encounter saw a lot of action with the final act in the Italian champion overtaking Pramac Ducati's Jorge Martin on the final lap of the race.

Six-time World Champion Marc Marquez, who was the fastest in Qualifying 2, finished third after RNF's Miguel Oliviera ran wide to allow the Spanish to take the podium. The local boy dropped to seventh as Red Bull KTM's Jack Miller, Aprilia's Maverick Vinales, and Aleix Espargaro also overtook him.

There were a couple of crashes during the race too with both the Mooney's Luca Marini and Marco Bezzechi going out in the same lap in separate incidents. Marini also took out Enea Bastianini on turn 5 while going down as he hit the Ducati from behind slipping. Bastianini landed awkwardly after being flown in the air and fractured his shoulder blade.

A few laps later Repsol Honda's Joan Mir collided with last year's runner-up Fabio Quartararo at turn 13. The Yamaha rider managed to remain on his bike but dropped at the back of the field before recovering to the 10th spot. Jack Miller also briefly took charge of the race by overtaking Bagnaia and Marquez but the lead was short-lived as dropped to fourth.
