Sauber deal sees Alfa Romeo return to F1

London, November 29: Alfa Romeo will return to Formula One for the first time since 1988 next season after agreeing a deal to become Sauber's title sponsor.

The team will race as Alfa Romeo Sauber in 2018 after signing a "multi-year technical and commercial partnership agreement" with the Italian organisation, which is part of Fiat Chrysler.

Sauber's cars will be powered by Ferrari engines but display the logo of Alfa Romeo, who were involved in F1 as both a constructor and engine supplier from 1950 until 1988.

"We are very pleased to welcome Alfa Romeo to the Sauber F1 Team," Sauber chairman Pascal Picci said in a statement.

"Alfa Romeo has a long history of success in Grand Prix racing, and we are very proud that this internationally renowned company has chosen to work with us for its return to the pinnacle of motorsport."

Giuseppe Farina won the inaugural F1 title driving an Alfa Romeo in 1950 and the great Juan Manuel Fangio claimed a drivers' championship for the team a year later.
