Spanish GP: Why F1 Teams Can’t Agree On The Right Strategy
George Russell joked about a six-stop race after Friday practice. By raceday, that number had settled somewhere far saner - but "saner" doesn't mean "settled." Heading into Sunday's Spanish Grand Prix, teams are genuinely split between two completely different strategies, and nobody's entirely sure which one wins.

Russell's six-stop comment came straight out of FP1's alarming tyre data. "It's often a possibility on new tarmacs that the grip is very high but you're sliding quite aggressively," he explained. "With the deg we had in FP1, a six-stop race would have been the fastest way. FP2 was slightly better and I'm sure the race on Sunday will be better again. But that's the biggest question mark." Toto Wolff reportedly ran his own early simulations and landed on the same six-stop estimate - which tells you this wasn't just driver hyperbole, it was a genuine read of some ugly opening data.
Why the Pit Lane Itself Is Fighting Against Extra Stops
Here's the tension at the center of this entire weekend: Madring's pit lane is one of the longest on the calendar, with a stop costing drivers an estimated 24-25 seconds. That number alone pushes the math heavily toward a one-stop race - pit lane time loss this severe punishes anyone who stops more than necessary. Pirelli's own calculations, per motorsport director Dario Marrafuschi, show a one-stop strategy running on medium and hard compounds, against a two-stop built around medium, hard, hard. Crucially, he noted the two approaches are essentially equal on total race time - soft-hard versus soft-hard-hard costs only about two seconds across the entire race distance. On paper, there's no wrong answer.
Why Degradation Is Pulling Teams the Other Way
Except tyre wear at Madring isn't behaving normally. The combination of a smooth, high-grip surface and fast corners has cars sliding aggressively, and that sliding generates severe overheating. Pirelli chief engineer Simone Berra called the drop-off "very high" - around 0.2-0.3 seconds per lap based on FP2 long runs - adding plainly: "It was a surprise to have these kinds of values. They were outside our range of expectations."
Two separate mechanisms are driving this. The first is front-left graining, caused by the smooth surface and high grip pushing rubber to peak stress quickly enough that the tread surface actually tears - triggering mid-corner understeer that's especially hard to manage through Madring's high-speed corners. Oscar Piastri flagged this as his single biggest headache from Friday: "It's been a nightmare to try and manage the tyres with graining. It normally gets better through a weekend, but we'll have to wait and see how much better." The second mechanism is rear-axle overheating, driven by the circuit's near-constant cornering. Combined, both push hard toward more frequent stops.
La Monumental's Outsized Role in All of This
Turn 12 deserves specific blame here. Its 24% banking subjects tyres to lateral and vertical loading that F1 engineers have genuinely never dealt with before, and telemetry from Liam Lawson's FP1 soft-tyre stint shows exactly what that costs: after his initial flying lap, pace fell off a cliff by lap 3, with degradation compounding through the following high-speed sequence - Turns 14, 15, 18, and 19 all showing visible performance loss. Across a five-lap window, Lawson's pace dropped by a full 3 seconds. FP2 showed a similar pattern on the medium compound, just less severe.
What the Tyre Allocations Actually Show
The official Pirelli tyre-sets breakdown tells its own story about who's planning for what. Almost every driver enters the race with three fresh sets of the soft (C4) compound held in reserve - Piastri, Norris, Russell, Antonelli, Albon, Sainz, and Lindblad among them - while hard-compound (C2) usage has been minimal across the board, with most drivers holding two unused sets. That pattern lines up with Pirelli's own read: barring a late Safety Car, softs are expected to be avoided in the race entirely given how badly they degrade, with the medium and hard compounds doing the heavy lifting instead. A handful of drivers stand out from that trend - Charles Leclerc and Lewis Hamilton both used a medium set already and have only a single soft in reserve, while Fernando Alonso and Esteban Ocon show heavier soft-tyre used counts than most of the field, hinting at different practice priorities heading into Sunday.
The Strategy Windows, Mapped Out
Pirelli's official strategy graphic lays out four realistic windows across the race's 57 laps:
- One-stop (medium → hard): pit between laps 18-24
- Two-stop (medium → hard → hard): first stop laps 10-16, second stop laps 31-37
- One-stop (soft → hard): pit between laps 15-21
- Two-stop (soft → hard → hard): first stop laps 9-15, second stop laps 30-36
The overlap in those windows is itself the story - there's real room for teams to split strategies without anyone being obviously wrong.
Why the Undercut Could Decide Everything Anyway
Even with the math roughly balanced, Marrafuschi pointed to the variable that could break the tie by force rather than choice: "It's a one-stop strategy on paper, but if someone triggers the undercut, then everyone is forced to follow. The undercut is affected by traffic. So it depends on the length of the pack on the track. Therefore, it's not something we can predict." Given how difficult overtaking is expected to be at Madring, a well-timed early stop that jumps a driver up the order could force a cascade of reactive two-stops regardless of what the pure tyre-life math says.
The Graining Wildcard
There's one more layer of uncertainty specifically tied to how the medium compound behaves. Berra noted graining should theoretically improve as the weekend progresses, but cautioned that Friday and Saturday running wasn't extensive enough to confirm that trend holds: "If there is graining, we'll have to manage the wear, and the deciding factor between one and two stops could also be graining, because if you don't have enough pace initially, then the tyre life needed to finish the race with a single stop will be really limited." In other words: if the mediums grain badly again in the race, the one-stop strategy that looks fine on paper right now could simply not survive that long.
The Safety Car Factor
Adding to the chaos calculus: Madring carries an exceptionally high probability of a Safety Car, given its narrow layout, new surface, and unforgiving walls. That creates a genuine gamble for anyone starting on the harder compound - sit tight and hope a Safety Car delivers a cheap, low-loss pit stop, or commit early to a faster tyre and bank track position while it's available.
What This Actually Means for Sunday
Strip away the competing data points and the picture is this: the pit lane says stop once, the tyres say stop twice, and the undercut says the field might not get a choice either way. Berra summed up the situation about as honestly as an engineer can: "I don't want to exclude any kind of situation... it's not easy; in fact, it is pretty complicated." With teams already showing divergent tyre-set patterns heading into the race, Madring's maiden Grand Prix looks set to be decided as much by which pit wall reads the degradation correctly in real time as by anything happening on track.
