George Russell is optimistic about Valtteri Bottas' return to Mercedes as a reserve driver for the 2025 Formula One season. Bottas, who was replaced by Russell in 2022, rejoins after his contract with Sauber ended. His experience with Mercedes, where he partnered Lewis Hamilton and achieved significant success, is expected to be invaluable for the team.
Bottas had a successful stint at Mercedes, winning ten races and securing 20 pole positions. He also finished second in the drivers' championship in 2019 and 2020. His return is seen as a boost for the team, which aims to improve on its fourth-place finish in last season's constructors' championship.

Russell acknowledges that Bottas' extensive knowledge of simulators and racing will be beneficial. "His experience is going to be massive," Russell stated. He believes Bottas' insights from his time at Sauber with the Ferrari engine could provide valuable perspectives for Mercedes.
The team also welcomes Kimi Antonelli, an 18-year-old making his F1 debut. Antonelli impressed during post-season testing at Yas Marina Circuit by completing 62 laps and setting the fifth-fastest time overall. He will be the first Italian driver since Antonio Giovinazzi in 2021 and one of the youngest ever in F1 history.
Russell expressed confidence in Antonelli's potential despite his lack of experience. "He is such a fantastic driver," Russell remarked. He believes Antonelli will quickly adapt and contribute valuable feedback to the team due to their shared background of starting racing young.
Despite past tensions between Russell and Bottas, particularly after their high-speed crash at Imola in 2021, Russell insists they have moved past it. "We are both professionals," he said, emphasizing their improved relationship over time.
The new line-up aims to leverage both Bottas’ experience and Antonelli’s fresh perspective to enhance team performance. With these changes, Mercedes hopes to climb higher in the standings next season.
