Damon Hill Critiques Verstappen's Driving Amid Norris Title Challenge In Formula One

Max Verstappen's recent driving tactics have sparked criticism, particularly after the Mexican Grand Prix. Former world champion Damon Hill voiced his concerns about Verstappen's aggressive style, which led to two 10-second penalties during the race. Carlos Sainz emerged victorious, while Verstappen finished sixth. Hill emphasised that racing should not resemble a demolition derby and called for measures to discipline drivers who engage in such tactics.

Verstappen's penalties were for forcing Lando Norris off the track and leaving the circuit at Turn Four. These incidents allowed Norris to finish second, narrowing the championship gap to 47 points with four races left. Hill stressed that Verstappen's talent should be used to outsmart opponents rather than resorting to reckless driving. "It can't just be a demolition derby just to keep your place," Hill stated on the Sky Sports F1 Podcast.

The Mexican Grand Prix incidents followed a controversial race in Austin, where Norris lost third place due to a penalty after an overtake on Verstappen. Red Bull team principal Christian Horner defended Verstappen, arguing that the penalties were overly harsh and supported his stance with data. Horner maintained that Verstappen drives aggressively but within F1 regulations.

Hill noted that Horner consistently defends Verstappen publicly, suggesting it creates an environment where Verstappen feels free to drive as he pleases without criticism from his team. Hill believes teams should also play a role in shaping their driver's attitude. "It's the responsibility of the team to also contribute to the driver's attitude," he added.

Despite recent controversies, Verstappen aims to extend his lead in the drivers' standings at the upcoming Brazilian Grand Prix. The Interlagos circuit is familiar territory for him, having won there last year. However, no driver has won consecutive races at this track since Nico Rosberg in 2014 and 2015.

As the season progresses towards its conclusion, discussions around driver conduct and team responsibilities are likely to continue. The focus remains on whether Verstappen can channel his skills effectively without crossing boundaries that lead to penalties or controversy.
