Who Is Gianpiero Lambiase? The Engineer Behind Max Verstappen’s F1 Success Explained

Gianpiero "GP" Lambiase is widely regarded as one of the most influential engineers in modern Formula 1, best known as the long-time race engineer to Max Verstappen and a central figure in Red Bull's championship-winning era.

With over two decades in Formula 1, Lambiase has evolved from a junior data engineer into one of the sport's most respected technical leaders. His recent reported move to McLaren has drawn widespread attention - not just because of the transfer itself, but because of how deeply he has been tied to Verstappen's success.

How Lambiase Started His Formula 1 Career

Lambiase began his journey into Formula 1 after graduating from University College London with a degree in Mechanical Engineering. His first role came in 2005, when he joined the Jordan team as a data engineer - a position now known as a performance engineer.

Within five years, he progressed into a race engineer role, working across the team's evolving identity as Jordan transitioned into Midland, Spyker and eventually Force India.

That early experience played a major role in shaping his technical versatility

"Being part of a smaller team exposed me to a broad range of responsibilities and areas of the business," he once explained, highlighting how working in leaner environments forced engineers to develop broader skill sets.

During his time at Force India, he worked with several drivers - including Sergio Pérez during the Mexican driver's first season with the team in 2014.

But by the end of that season, Lambiase chose to move further up the grid.

The Move to Red Bull That Changed Everything

Lambiase joined Red Bull Racing in 2015, initially working with Daniil Kvyat. His defining moment came in 2016, when Red Bull promoted a teenage Max Verstappen to the senior team.

From that moment onward, Lambiase became Verstappen's race engineer - forming one of the most successful driver-engineer partnerships in Formula 1 history.

Together, the duo built a reputation for sharp strategy, direct communication and relentless performance improvements.

"Building rapport and trust is paramount in a successful driver-engineer pairing," Lambiase explained, emphasising the importance of communication between driver and engineer.

Their relationship quickly became famous among fans, especially for its intense but highly effective radio exchanges during races.

The Verstappen-Lambiase Partnership in Numbers

Few driver-engineer pairings in modern Formula 1 have been as successful as Verstappen and Lambiase.

Key achievements from their partnership include:

  • World Championships with Verstappen: 4 titles - 2021, 2022, 2023, 2024
  • Race Wins Together: Over 60 Formula 1 victories during their partnership era
  • Podium Finishes: 100+ podiums across multiple seasons
  • Constructors' Championships (Red Bull era overlap): Multiple team titles during Red Bull's dominance period

These numbers reflect not just driver talent, but consistent technical excellence - the hallmark of a strong engineering partnership.

Lambiase's role became especially visible during championship battles, where split-second strategy calls often determined race outcomes.

Why He Is So Important to Verstappen

Beyond statistics, Lambiase has been a central figure in Verstappen's professional inner circle - alongside Verstappen's father Jos Verstappen and senior Red Bull advisor Helmut Marko.

The level of trust between driver and engineer is critical in Formula 1, and Verstappen has repeatedly credited Lambiase for helping guide him through both victories and setbacks.

Following one emotional race finish, Verstappen publicly described Lambiase as more than just an engineer.

"Of course, he is my race engineer, but I see him as my friend," Verstappen said, reflecting on their long-standing relationship.

That bond is one reason why Lambiase's reported departure is viewed as such a significant blow for Red Bull.

Why His Potential Move to McLaren Matters

If confirmed, Lambiase's move to McLaren would represent one of the most important technical transfers in recent years.

He is expected to take on a senior leadership role, strengthening McLaren's already growing technical structure - which includes several former Red Bull personnel.

More importantly, the move would break one of Formula 1's most stable partnerships - potentially reshaping team dynamics across the grid.

For Red Bull, replacing Lambiase will not simply be about finding another engineer. It will mean rebuilding a working relationship that has been refined over nearly a decade.

And for Verstappen, losing the calm voice that guided him through multiple championship campaigns could mark the beginning of a new chapter - both technically and emotionally - in his Formula 1 career.

What Does a F1 Race Engineer Actually Do?

In Formula 1, the race engineer acts as the driver's primary voice and technical strategist during race weekends.

Lambiase's responsibilities included:

  • Interpreting driver feedback about car performance
  • Adjusting race strategies in real time
  • Coordinating technical departments including aerodynamics and powertrain teams
  • Optimising car setup before and during races
  • Communicating with the driver under high-pressure race conditions
  • In 2022, Lambiase was promoted to Head of Race Engineering, expanding his role to oversee operations for both Red Bull cars.

Later, in 2024, he took on an even broader role as Head of Racing, managing all trackside activities across the team.

Even with these leadership duties, he continued working directly with Verstappen - a rare combination of operational leadership and hands-on race engineering.
