Lightning McQueen has arrived at Monza, but the famous red race car will not be lining up on the Formula 1 grid.

The Disney and Pixar character is making an appearance at the 2026 Italian Grand Prix as Formula 1 and Disney celebrate 20 years of the Cars franchise. McQueen will take an honorary lap around the historic Monza circuit, while the official F1 safety car will also receive a Cars-inspired makeover for the race weekend.

The unusual sight is part of an expanded partnership between Formula 1 and Disney, bringing the world of Cars into the sport for the first time.

Why is Lightning McQueen at Monza?

The timing is deliberate.

The original Cars movie was released in 2006 and turns 20 this year. Formula 1 and Disney are using one of the championship's most iconic circuits to mark the anniversary, with McQueen receiving an F1-inspired design for his appearance at Monza.

Rather than being used as a competitive vehicle, McQueen will complete an honorary lap around the circuit during the Italian Grand Prix weekend.

The official F1 safety car has also been given a special Cars-themed livery, extending the crossover beyond a single promotional appearance.

The collaboration also includes a new range of F1 and Cars merchandise, including clothing, collectibles and die-cast models.

How did the F1-Disney partnership begin?

The Monza appearance is not the first time Disney characters have featured at an F1 race.

Formula 1 and Disney launched their collaboration in 2025, initially focusing on Mickey Mouse and the wider Mickey & Friends franchise.

The partnership made its race-weekend debut at the Las Vegas Grand Prix, where Mickey featured in a show at the Bellagio Fountains. Disney characters subsequently appeared at other Grands Prix, including races in China, Canada and Britain.

The partnership has now been extended through 2028, with Cars becoming part of the collaboration for the first time.

The expansion allows F1 to connect with a franchise that has a particularly strong link to motorsport and racing culture.

Why does Cars have such a strong connection with F1?

The Cars franchise has incorporated real-world motorsport figures and influences since the first film.

Lightning McQueen's world is fictional, but the films have repeatedly borrowed from real racing culture, while several prominent Formula 1 drivers have also contributed to the franchise over the years.

Michael Schumacher appeared as an animated version of himself in the original Cars, while Mario Andretti also featured as a fictionalised version of himself.

Three-time F1 world champion Niki Lauda provided the German-language voice for Strip "The King" Weathers.

The connection continued in Cars 2, released in 2011, when Lewis Hamilton voiced an animated version of himself. Fernando Alonso, Sebastian Vettel and Vitaly Petrov also contributed to regional versions of the film.

Hamilton returned for Cars 3 in 2017, voicing a digital assistant character associated with Cruz Ramirez. Vettel and Alonso again provided voices for localised versions.

That history makes the arrival of Lightning McQueen at an F1 weekend a natural extension of an existing relationship between the franchise and the sport.

Liam Lawson is one of the drivers most excited about McQueen

There is also an obvious personal connection for at least one current F1 driver.

Racing Bulls driver Liam Lawson is known to be a major Cars fan and was pictured with Lightning McQueen at Monza ahead of the Italian Grand Prix.

That made Lawson one of the more obvious candidates to embrace the character's arrival, with fans quickly reacting to the photographs of the pair together.

For a generation of racing fans, Cars was an early introduction to the idea of racing, making McQueen's presence at an actual Formula 1 circuit particularly fitting.

What will Lightning McQueen actually do at Monza?

McQueen will not participate in the Grand Prix itself.

His role is promotional and celebratory, with the character scheduled to take an honorary lap around Monza during the Italian Grand Prix weekend.

Meanwhile, the real F1 safety car will carry a special Cars-inspired design.

The weekend will also feature the launch of the F1 x Disney and Pixar Cars merchandise collection, combining Formula 1 branding with characters and imagery from the franchise.

Why Monza?

Monza is one of the most recognisable circuits in Formula 1 and is synonymous with speed, making it an appropriate setting for a Cars anniversary celebration.

The Italian Grand Prix is also one of the championship's most historic events, giving the collaboration a prominent backdrop rather than simply placing McQueen at an ordinary race weekend.

For Disney, it brings one of its most recognisable racing characters into a real motorsport environment. For F1, it offers another way to introduce the championship to younger fans and audiences who may have first encountered racing through Cars.
