2025 NBA Playoff Race Intensifies: Standings, Clinching Updates, and Play-In Picture

The 2025 NBA Playoffs are rapidly approaching, with the postseason set to begin on April 19, 2025. Before that, the SoFi NBA Play-In Tournament will take place from April 15-18, where teams ranked 7th through 10th in each conference will compete for the final two playoff spots.

As the regular season nears its end, the standings are shifting frequently, with teams pushing hard for positioning. As of March 17, 2025, following games played on March 16, the Oklahoma City Thunder are leading the Western Conference, holding a commanding 13-game lead, and are on track to secure the No. 1 seed.

Additionally, with a Denver Nuggets loss, the Thunder clinched the Northwest Division title. The Houston Rockets and Denver Nuggets remain well-positioned in the top tier of the conference, while teams like the Los Angeles Lakers, Minnesota Timberwolves, and Golden State Warriors continue to battle for playoff spots.

After the Lakers’ victory over the Phoenix Suns on March 16, they moved within one game of the Memphis Grizzlies, who currently hold the No. 4 seed. The Clippers, Mavericks, and Suns are also in close competition, with only a few games separating them in the race for the playoffs.

In the Eastern Conference, the Cleveland Cavaliers are holding steady at No. 1, despite a loss to the Orlando Magic on March 16. The Cavaliers still maintain a strong 7.5-game lead over the second-place Boston Celtics, who are firmly in control of the No. 2 spot.

Meanwhile, the Milwaukee Bucks, despite their loss to the Thunder, and the Indiana Pacers are both competing for favorable positioning. The Magic’s win strengthened their hold on the No. 8 seed, while the Atlanta Hawks’ loss to the Brooklyn Nets reduced their lead over the Magic to just half a game for the No. 7 spot.

As of March 17, the Oklahoma City Thunder and Cleveland Cavaliers have already clinched playoff spots, and with only a few weeks left in the regular season, the race for the final spots remains tight. The coming days will be crucial as teams fight for position heading into the postseason.
