Indian table tennis icon Achanta Sharath Kamal's illustrious two-decade career came to an end on Saturday with a Round of 16 defeat to his doubles partner, Snehit Suravajjula, at the WTT Star Contender Chennai 2025 Presented by IndianOil.
The younger player displayed remarkable composure and skill to claim a 3-0 victory (11-9, 11-8, 11-9) at the Jawaharlal Nehru Indoor Stadium.

Snehit's triumph marked a symbolic passing of the torch, representing the rise of a new generation in Indian table tennis. His victory, combined with Manav Thakkar's historic quarterfinal appearance at the event, showcased the promising future of the sport in India. Sharath, a mentor and inspiration to many, received a heartfelt ovation from the crowd, acknowledging his immense contribution to Indian table tennis.
In a touching tribute, Sharath participated in an exhibition match against Egypt's Omar Assar, offering fans one last glimpse of his brilliance. Following the match, he delivered an emotional speech, reflecting on his career and expressing his desire to contribute to the sport beyond his playing days.
"Somewhere down the line I had felt it's enough and I wanted to explore the possibility of giving back to the sport from the other side of the court. I have done my part as a player, I felt I had contributed enough to the country as a player, and I want to contribute from the other side, as an administrator, or a coach, a mentor, or even as just a senior player," Sharath said.
He extended his gratitude to his family, friends, fans, and supporting organizations including IndianOil, SDAT, Stupa Sports Analytics, Ultimate Table Tennis, TTFI, and ITTF for their unwavering support throughout his career.
