FC Barcelona and Catalan police have confirmed the tragic death of a 54-year-old construction worker following a workplace accident at the iconic Camp Nou stadium.

According to a statement released by Catalan police, local precinct officers received an urgent report at 3:30 PM (ET) concerning a serious workplace accident in the Les Corts district of Barcelona.

The 54-year-old man reportedly died as a result of a blow sustained while carrying out construction work inside the stadium grounds. Police units from the Les Corts precinct, alongside officers from the Investigation Unit and medical personnel from the Emergency Medical System, rushed to the scene. However, despite their immediate response, medical teams were unable to save his life.

Following standard legal procedures, police authorities confirmed that they have formally notified both the on-call investigating judge and the Department of Business and Labor to initiate a full investigation.

FC Barcelona and President Joan Laporta Express Condolences

In the wake of the tragedy, FC Barcelona issued an official statement expressing deep sorrow over the loss of life at their home ground.

"The club wishes to express its deepest condolences and extend its heartfelt support to his family, friends, and colleagues," the club stated.

FC Barcelona president Joan Laporta also reached out directly to convey his sympathies to the deceased worker's family, placing himself and the football club entirely at their disposal during this grief-stricken time.
Background on Camp Nou Redevelopment

Major structural renovations at the Camp Nou have been ongoing since June 2023, following an agreement between the club and Turkish construction firm Limak.

While the original schedule aimed for the project's completion by June 2026, the timeline has officially been pushed back to 2027, with the final installation of the new stadium roof set to follow.
