Barcelona player shot Dead in Ecuador, played for his country 9 Times

Mario Pineida, a 33-year-old Ecuadorian defender for Barcelona SC and former national team player with nine caps, was fatally shot in Guayaquil on Wednesday (December 17).

The attack occurred in the Samanes neighborhood, where assailants on motorcycles opened fire, killing Pineida instantly alongside another unidentified victim while injuring a third person, reportedly his mother. Ecuador's Interior Ministry confirmed the death and deployed a special police unit to investigate amid rising gang violence linked to drug trafficking.

Pineida began his professional journey at Independiente del Valle in 2010, amassing 182 appearances and 9 goals before joining Barcelona SC in 2016, where he played over 210 matches across stints from 2016-2021, 2023-2024, and 2025. He had brief spells at Fluminense in Brazil (24 games, 0 goals in 2022) and El Nacional on loan (9 games in 2024-2025). Internationally, his debut came in a 2014 friendly against the USA, with his last appearance as a substitute in the 2021 Copa America against Brazil; he featured in the 2017 edition but not in 2026 World Cup qualifiers.

What Happened?

Ecuadorian media reported the shooting targeted Pineida, who was with his mother and another woman outside a shop when gunmen struck. Primicias outlet detailed the motorcycle assailants' approach, marking this as part of escalating violence in Guayaquil, a drug trafficking hotspot. Recent precedents include three second-division players killed in September 2025 over alleged betting links and Bryan Angula wounded in October.

Ecuador faces its deadliest year, with over 9,000 projected homicides in 2025, surpassing 2024's 7,063 and 2023's 8,248, driven by organized crime. Soccer players have become vulnerable, with match-fixing mafias fueling a global $1.7 trillion criminal network per UN estimates. Barcelona SC, bicampeón nacional with Pineida in recent Copa Libertadores semifinals, issued a statement of profound grief, promising tributes.
