Cricket Australia Commemorates Phillip Hughes Before India-Australia Test in Adelaide

Cricket Australia is set to commemorate the 10th anniversary of Phillip Hughes' tragic passing with several initiatives. A tribute will be held before the second Test between India and Australia at Adelaide Oval from December 6-10.

Additionally, Hughes will be honoured during three Sheffield Shield matches, where players will don black armbands and flags will be flown at half-mast.

Hughes, a talented left-handed batsman, played 26 Tests for Australia. He tragically passed away just days before his 26th birthday in 2014 after being struck by a bouncer during a domestic match.

Representing South Australia, he was hit on an unprotected area below his left ear while attempting a hook shot against Sean Abbott at the SCG. Despite wearing a helmet, the impact proved fatal.

Tributes and Commemorations

Cricket Australia CEO Nick Hockley expressed that this period would be one of reflection for those who knew and admired Hughes. "We wanted to ensure that the Hughes family, particularly, were comfortable with any commemorations and that we celebrate Phillip's life and incredible achievements appropriately," he stated on Friday.

A special documentary produced by the home association will be aired before the second Test as part of a two-week commemoration programme. A moment of silence will also be observed before play on day four of all matches. This initiative aims to honour Hughes' memory and contributions to cricket.

During his final innings, Hughes was batting on 63 when he collapsed after being struck. He received mouth-to-mouth resuscitation on the field before being taken to St Vincent's Hospital in Sydney. There, he underwent surgery and was placed in an induced coma but unfortunately did not recover from the injury.

Legacy and Impact

The left-hander was seen as one of Australia's promising cricketers during a transitional phase for the team. In the Australia-India Adelaide Test following his death, Hughes was named as the home team's 13th player. The score he was batting at in his last match, 63, was honoured with seconds of applause ahead of the game.
