Delhi Government Launches Dedicated Department for Sports and Youth Affairs to Support Young Athletes

Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta has announced a new department for sports and youth affairs aimed at nurturing young athletes. This initiative includes establishing coaching centres to ensure equitable access to training resources for all children in Delhi.

Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta has unveiled a new department dedicated to sports and youth affairs. This initiative aims to nurture young athletes in the city.

The announcement was made during an interaction with children from the Delhi Olympic Association, government schools, and sports training centres at the Delhi Assembly.

New Sports Department Established in Delhi

Gupta highlighted that the new department will focus solely on supporting and developing young athletes' potential. She stressed the importance of providing infrastructure, respect, and long-term support for athletes. "Our athletes deserve more than applause -- they deserve infrastructure, respect, and long-term institutional support," she asserted.

Sports Coaching Centres Across Delhi

The chief minister also revealed plans to establish sports coaching centres throughout Delhi. These centres aim to ensure that no athlete is left behind due to a lack of access or resources. Every child in Delhi will now have the opportunity to receive professional training and pursue their sporting dreams, regardless of their background.

Gupta recalled her early days in office when she was inspired by the dedication of Delhi’s athletes. Despite their perseverance, they lacked adequate recognition and institutional support. To address this, she introduced what she described as the most progressive sports policy in the country.

Incentives for Olympic Medal Winners

The new sports policy offers significant cash awards for Olympic medal winners from Delhi. Gold medalists will receive Rs 7 crore, silver medalists Rs 5 crore, and bronze medalists Rs 3 crore. These are the highest cash rewards offered by any Indian state.

Additionally, athletes will have opportunities to secure Grade A, B, and C government jobs. This ensures long-term career prospects for them. Gupta emphasised that these initiatives are not just incentives but foundational tools to empower youth and help them chase their dreams with dignity and support.

Renovation of Stadiums

The chief minister also announced plans to renovate neglected stadiums with modern facilities. The newly formed department will oversee these developments. Gupta's efforts aim to provide comprehensive support for athletes in Delhi.

These initiatives reflect a commitment to nurturing talent and providing necessary resources for young athletes in Delhi. The focus remains on creating an environment where every aspiring athlete can thrive.
