A wave of fitness enthusiasm swept across the nation with the Fit India Sundays on Cycle initiative, witnessing participation from various corners of the country including Gujarat and Kerala, to the bustling streets of New Delhi.
On March 30, spearheaded by Union Minister for Youth Affairs and Sports, Dr. Mansukh Mandaviya, in Junagadh, Gujarat, and Kerala's Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan in Trivandrum, the event successfully encouraged people of all ages to embrace cycling as a form of exercise.

The event in Junagadh saw more than 500 participants cycling from Girnar Gate to Bhavnath Mahadev temple, an initiative organized by the Sports Authority of India (SAI) Regional Centre in Gandhinagar.
Similarly, in Trivandrum, cyclists covered a 7km route starting from Cliff House to the Central Stadium, an event hosted by the SAI Lakshmibai National College of Physical Education (SAI LNCPE). These rallies aimed not only at promoting fitness but also at highlighting the scenic beauty and heritage of the respective regions.
Highlighting the importance of including the younger generation in fitness activities, this week's event put a special emphasis on the participation of school students. Dr. Mansukh Mandaviya, while addressing the crowd in Junagadh, stated, "You can make a lifelong friendship with cycling, so make this exercise your best friend." He further mentioned how the Fit India campaign has turned into a nationwide festival, with school children's active participation demonstrating this phenomenon. The message was clear: prioritizing health is essential for the nation's progress.
Schools from various parts of the country, including Tagore International School EOK, Delhi Public School Gurugram Sec 45, and Modern School Barakhamba Road among others, saw their students joining in, representing the educational sector's commitment to fostering a culture of physical well-being among the youth.

The national capital's event was notably graced by sports luminaries like Arjuna Awardee boxer Sonia Lather, and Asian U-22 Championships 2024 gold medalist Prachi Dhankhar. Indian cricketer Deepti Sharma, although not physically present, contributed virtually, sharing her insights on the benefits of cycling for fitness and community bonding. Sharma, who played a pivotal role in winning gold at the Asian Games 2022, expressed, "Cycling is not only a fantastic way to stay fit but also an enjoyable activity that strengthens connections within our communities and promotes environmental consciousness."
Dhankhar and Lather echoed similar sentiments, emphasizing the inclusivity and broad appeal of the Fit India Movement. Dhankhar appreciated the movement's impact, initiated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in 2019, for its role in encouraging a healthier nation through diverse activities. Lather highlighted the joy of cycling alongside participants of all age groups, reinforcing the idea that fitness knows no age limit.
The events also saw significant engagement from over 500 fitness enthusiasts, cycling groups, and several organizations in Kerala, including the Indian Army CRPF, BSF, NCC, and Kerala Police, among others. This collective participation underscored the widespread support for the Fit India initiative across different sectors of society.
Khelo India Centres (KICs) and other locations across the country also hosted active cycling drives, demonstrating the initiative's reach and the collective effort to promote fitness as a daily habit. The involvement of various stakeholders, including the Cycling Federation of India (CFI), Physical Education Foundation of India (PEFI), doctors from the Indian Medical Association (IMA), and numerous cycling groups, ensured the success of these events, aligning with the broader objectives of the Fit India Movement.
The Fit India Sundays on Cycle initiative has notably drawn over 2 lakh riders since its inception in December 2024, covering more than 4500 locations nationwide. This remarkable turnout signals a growing consciousness about fitness and health across India, fostering a community spirit united by the simple yet impactful act of cycling.
