In what appears to be a significant political development, Mohammad Asaduddin, son of former Indian cricket captain-turned-politician Mohammad Azharuddin, has been appointed as the General Secretary of Indian National Congress.
The former India captain Azharuddin announced the news on his social media, congratulating his son on his new post and emergence in politics.

"A proud and emotional moment for me as my son, Mohammed Asaduddin, steps into his official role in public life as the General Secretary of the Telangana Congress," Azharuddin wrote on X Tuesday.
"I've seen his commitment to people, his passion for service, and his sincerity up close. May he stay grounded, focused, and guided by the values that truly matter. Wishing him all the very best as he takes on this responsibility," the ost further added.
Mohammad Asaduddin belongs to a prominent political and sporting family. His father, after a glittering cricketing career, entered the political arena in 2009, representing a parliamentary constituency in Uttar Pradesh and later holding key organisational posts within the party's state unit in Telangana.
Asaduddin, who played domestic cricket briefly, is now reportedly engaging with party workers at the grassroots level and is expected to take up a bigger role as he becomes the general secretary of the Indian National Congress in Telangana.
The Congress has appointed 35-year-old Asaduddin as its candidate for the upcoming bypolls in Hyderabad's Jubilee Hills constituency, following the sudden demise of sitting MLA Maganti Gopinath, who suffered a fatal heart attack on Sunday. It is likely that Asaduddin may well be contesting in the bypolls but he is not looking too much ahead.
"I don't know what's in store for me. My dad is still active in politics. Let's see," Asaduddin was quoted as saying by The Print.
Asaduddin has switched his career to Politics from cricket and will be hoping for a grand start in it. He is a graduate in Law and is the husband of Anam Mirza, sister of Tennis star Sania Mirza.
Speculation around Asaduddin's candidacy intensified after the seat fell vacant. In the November 2023 Telangana Assembly elections, the Congress had fielded former cricketer Mohammad Azharuddin from Jubilee Hills.
