The first high-altitude para sports centre in the world is set to be established in Leh, Ladakh. This facility aims to train para-athletes for international competitions, including the 2028 Paralympics.
The Ladakh Autonomous Hill Development Council (LAHDC) and the Aditya Mehta Foundation (AMF) have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to bring this vision to life.

This centre will provide top-notch training for para-athletes from India and around the globe. The unique high-altitude environment offers a competitive advantage, allowing athletes to enhance their skills and performance. Indian para-athletes will also have the chance to train alongside international champions.
Advocate Tashi Gyalson, Chief Executive Councillor of Ladakh, expressed pride in this initiative. "It is a very proud feeling for us that Leh will be establishing the world’s first-ever high-altitude centre for para sports," he stated. He believes this centre will help India aim for a top-10 finish at the next Paralympics.
While the centre is under construction, AMF will identify Children with Special Needs from Leh-Ladakh for training at their Infinity Parasports Academy in Hyderabad. This interim phase focuses on building foundational skills and offering rehabilitation for aspiring athletes from the region.
Aditya Mehta, Founder of AMF, highlighted the significance of this project: "At the Aditya Mehta Foundation, we believe that excellence knows no boundaries." He emphasised that Leh's environment is perfect for developing resilience and strength in athletes.
The initiative reflects LAHDC's dedication to breaking barriers and creating opportunities for para-athletes. The collaboration with AMF aims to position India among top nations in para sports by maximising participation in future Paralympic Games.
A dedicated committee has been formed to oversee the development of this centre. Officials have been directed to begin identifying land for the facility. This step ensures that all necessary infrastructure is in place to support para-athletes effectively.
The MoU signing was attended by notable council members and AMF representatives. Key attendees included Hon'ble Councillors Lobzang Sherab, Tundup Norboo, and Mirza Hussain; ACR Shabir Hussain; District Social Welfare Officer; Tehsildar; Chief Education Officer; officials from District Youth Services and Sports; and Presidents of Munsel, Rewa, and PAGIR societies.
