India's Surfing Federation Launches 2025 National Event Calendar For Improved Training

The Surfing Federation of India has announced a robust 2025 event calendar, featuring nine national competitions aimed at enhancing training and competitive exposure for Indian surfers as they prepare for the Asian Games in Japan.

Following a remarkable year where Indian surfers secured the initial quotas for the 2026 Asian Games in Japan, the Surfing Federation of India (SFI) is intensifying its efforts to provide ample training and competitive opportunities for the nation's surfers.

The federation has laid out a comprehensive national event schedule for 2025, aiming to enhance preparation for the sport's introduction at the prestigious Asian Games. This move underlines the federation's commitment to nurturing talent and bolstering India's stature in the international surfing arena.

2025 stands as a pivotal year for Indian surfing, thanks to the strategic organisation of nine national competitions across surfing and Stand-Up Paddle (SUP), scheduled at various key coastal locations.

This strategic planning is geared towards improving competitive exposure and providing rigorous training for Indian surfers, ensuring they are on par with international standards. The announcement follows a notable 2024 season, which saw Indian surfers achieving significant milestones and enhancing India's global surfing profile.

International Recognition and Future Ambitions

India's surfing community has made significant strides on the international stage, evidenced by its membership with the International Surfing Association (ISA). ISA President Fernando Aguerre acknowledged, "Surfing is one of the fastest-growing sports worldwide, so we are happy to see India taking positive steps to develop its immense potential.

"The ISA is committed to supporting all its member federations in the development of the sport and our mission of creating a better world through surfing." This international acknowledgement underscores the progress and potential of Indian surfing, encouraging further development.

The 2025 National Surfing and Stand-Up Paddle (SUP) Event Calendar marks a milestone in India's surfing journey, showcasing the sport's rapid growth within the country. The federation's unveiling of this extensive calendar follows a breakthrough year in 2024, where significant achievements were made both nationally and internationally. This upcoming season aims to solidify India's competitive edge in the global surfing landscape.

Reflecting on the progress and goals for Indian surfing, Arun Vasu, President of the Surfing Federation of India, stated, "2024 has been a transformative year for us. Our athletes, supported by the wider surfing community, state associations, and key partners, have demonstrated incredible dedication.

"As we move into 2025, our focus remains on fostering talent and creating more opportunities for our surfers. The upcoming national events are crucial to sustaining our momentum and elevating India's presence in the global surfing community. I extend my gratitude to the Tamil Nadu, Kerala, and Karnataka governments for their invaluable support in our journey."

Upcoming National Competitions and Growth Trajectories

The season kicks off with the Varkala Surfing Championship in Kerala in February, followed by the Indian Open of Surfing in Karnataka in May. The East Coast Pro Tour will make stops in Pondicherry, Mahabalipuram, and Covelong in August.

Meanwhile, the SUP competitions will start in June with the Alambara SUP Challenge and Palkbay SUP Challenge in Tamil Nadu, preceding the Karnataka Paddle Festival in November and the Kerala SUP Challenge in December. These events are instrumental in providing Indian surfers with the competitive edge needed for international success.

India's under-21 squad also showcased their talent at the Indian Ocean Challenge in Re-union Islands, bagging silver and bronze medals. Moreover, India hosted its first International Stand-Up Paddle Championship and entered a strategic collaboration with the Surfing Federation of France to further the sport's development.

Atsushi Sakai, President of the Asian Surfing Federation (ASF), highlighted India's burgeoning role in the Asian surfing scene, stating, "India's debut at the 2026 Asian Games in Japan marks the beginning of an exciting era for the sport in the region. With a strong adventure sports culture, a vast coastal infrastructure, and increasing connectivity, India has the potential to become a major surfing hub. The opportunities are limitless."

2024 marked a significant leap for Indian surfing, with the national team securing a 5th place ranking in Asia and impressing at several international meets. A highlight was the Asian Surfing Championship in the Maldives, where India clinched two slots for the 2026 Asian Games and secured a silver medal in the team event. These accomplishments underscore the growth and potential of Indian surfing on the global stage.
