Phoenix Suns star Kevin Durant recently responded to criticism from sports analyst Skip Bayless, who suggested that the 36-year-old forward appeared to be mentally disengaged from the game.
After the Suns secured a 125-116 win over the Dallas Mavericks on Sunday, Bayless shared his opinion on The Skip Bayless Show. He claimed that Durant no longer seemed as focused as he once was and argued that his involvement in a documentary about his career indicated he was nearing the end of his playing days.
He also criticized the Suns for lacking energy and defensive effort, adding that their struggles reflected Durant’s declining level of engagement. Bayless stated that while Durant continued to produce strong individual statistics this season, his impact on winning had diminished.

He expressed the belief that the Suns, despite having a talented roster, did not display the same intensity and motivation as top teams in the league. He compared their current state to Durant’s former team, the Golden State Warriors, where he believed the forward had played with much more passion and focus.
In response, Durant took to social media to dismiss Bayless’ remarks. He downplayed the criticism by suggesting that both he and Bayless were past their prime. Later, he also questioned the analyst’s choice of words, asking for clarification on what it meant to be “mentally semi-retired.”
The exchange quickly gained traction, sparking debates among fans and analysts. Some defended Durant, pointing to his consistent production on the court, while others questioned whether his leadership had been effective in helping the Suns succeed.
Despite the controversy, Durant and the Suns remain focused on their upcoming matchup against the Memphis Grizzlies as they continue their push to climb the Western Conference standings. The team will look to prove doubters wrong as they fight to secure a playoff spot.
